I use to wander around a lot when i was a kid, did you?

I used to wander around my neighborhood when I was a kid about the age of 6 and 7. I used to buy my own things and visit friends. My father says its not normal because my mother should have been watching me more often. She didn't really show concern about it.
The only dangerous thing about it was that I almost got chased by a few bears. (I lived right by the entrance of a forest.)

If you did the same I would like to hear your interesting stories.

Your mom is fucked up. 12

I used to wander a lot when I was a kid thinking that someday I would turn into Spider-man or Harry Potter. But nothing happened. This life sucks man.

I wandered the neighborhood too and found a lot of interesting friends that way, no bears though, that is pretty dangerous. only animals to watch out for were loose dogs, I got attacked once but I was wearing layers so it was ok. My next door neighbor friend once found a rifle in her dads garage, it wasn't loaded but she proceeded door to door asking neighbors for spare bullets lol... another time we had plans to make a gas station in the same way most kids would make a lemonade stand... We collected gas from leaky trucks and were going to pump it in our customers cars from water guns... But then a dog came over and spilled it all then chased us up tree... Lol, fun times.

My older step sister and I used to do this. We were heavily unsupervised. We'd get on our bikes and ride to different convenience stores, wooded areas, friends houses, and faraway towns. We knew many shortcuts that werent considered ideal for children. Most of those wooded areas, long dirt roads and fields had gang activity or hobos gathered there. We were poor, so we were always creative with how to spend our money. Back then 4 dollars could get us a slice of pizza, two small sodas, two packs of cookies, and an ice cream cone. We would sometimes shoplift if we didn't have cash or do other things small children shouldnt. When I think about it, we could have been kidnapped or something back then.

I was "kidnapped". I put it in speech marks because it was only for an hour and my friend's dad came and saved us.

But yeah, I used to wander a lot. My dad had to work every hour God sent and my mum was agoraphobic so nobody really cared what I did, as long as I wasn't in their way. Parental attention would have been nice, but having such freedom was equally nice. I know not everyone gets that but it was like I was alone in the world and could just explore it how I wanted. It's difficult to explain properly, but it was good.

    • Yeah at the time I lived with my mother and visited my dad. I loved being alone because I felt like I could do so much.

Yeah, I know it sounds hard, but there are some benefits to having a lot of time to yourself. Although, I think it's made me need more alone-time as an adult. Hmm.

I'm actually glad someone does, although it probably doesn't help that someone. :/

Ya, but only in rural areas, like the lands and forests around my grandma's farm. Never liked wandering around urban areas, a lot of the kids were mean and I was very shy.

Being adventurous and wandering around is the best part of being a kid, really. I used to go places so far away I would probably drive these days, or just wouldn't bother.

Me and my friend used to always have little adventures:) My favourite one was when we went a little bit into the forest, which is just at the end of my street. There was this lovely little place, which we decided to make our own by turning it into a den. We fixed the place up a bit and then went to the shop to buy snacks. Then pretty much everyday we had like a miniature tea party:). I miss it, and I miss him as well:(.

However, there weren't any bears. If there had been, my mam wouldn't have let me out as much.

Never did, though I didn't really live in a neighborhood either. Once I was old enough I would go for walks down the road and in the woods and across people's fields and shit, but still.

6 or 7 is far too young to allow a kid to wander a neighborhood alone. Yeah most people are good people, but it's that one time when that one freak accident happens that could change everything.

I'm 22 and live in a small college town, I still won't go out alone if it's at night. Gotta be safe.

You mom should have been watching you , and you could have got kidnapped but I hear lots of children do that .

  • Nope. I was allowed anywhere on our street and the neighborhood circle and didn't go further...

I never went further than where my parents said or stayed out past the streetlights coming on because I knew I'd get a spanking. It's mostly my dad's fear that stopped and still stops me from doing things.

I went everywhere , man if my parents knew. Rode my bike or we could hop fences and get free train to anywhere,
1/2 the time I'd be on a train over the other side of the city 10 o'clock at night figuring out how to get back tio my suburb at 8-10.

My friends and I used to wander into the military junkyard and other various things on the base. We didn't get into any trouble although there were injuries, none of them life threatening of course. Every place I moved to always had places to explore and at night we'd all play sports in the cul de sac, with the group of boys. Man we had so many adventures and so much fun, water fights, forts in the woods and jumping into trashcans and rolling down hills.

When I got older I wandered off more on my own with or without friends, always looking for the perfect spot by the river, an area of beauty or tranquility. I was supervised somewhat when younger but I was trusted to an extent, depending on the area we lived in. The conditions of my childhood changed often though. Hard to explain.

I pity every child I know of today that does not get the opportunity to have the adventures that I did. I hope the age of play and imagination will never come to an end. Exploring and adventures teach kids the important things in life... nostalgia...

Yes, and it got my friends in a lot of trouble as I usually got them to do some pranks with me along the way.

i always found myself wandering off, but never too far. My mom slept a lot, so i spent hours outside playing in my neighbor's back yard or jumping this wall behind it,.which led to an alley behind a shopping center with me best friend Matt. There was always a buggy back there we'd play on. I'd also walk down the street a little bit to hang out with other kids. Then one day my mom decided to become overprotective and sent me to daycare. I resented her for that. I felt like a caged animal and didn't wander too much anymore until i got older, unless my older sister was with me.

I can't imagine letting my daughter out of my sight at that age, although i would love for her to have the freedom and experience of wandering. There are too many kidnappings and crazy people in my city.

Haha are you kidding? I'm sorry, but I just don't think that parents that let their under 10 year old wander around wherever they want to, love their children very much, or at least are too lazy and self absorbed to care about their well being. I think a lot of people have kids when they aren't ready for them, and are pretty much neutral if they get kidnapped, just do the bare minimum.
I'm from Kansas, the only place I was allowed to wander around COMPLETELY unsupervised was on my grandparents farm.

Rarely left the house as a kid. I was one of the weird ones that stayed in and drew pictures all day.

It really depends where you live and how dangerous the area is. I wouldn't have been allowed out without an adult at that age, which I think wasn't the best thing for me at that time. If I ever have kids in the area I live I wouldn't think twice before I let them out alone at that sort of age; I think it's probably good for them to develop some more independence and curiosity about the world :)

I use to wander through dry creek beds. People would often throw building scrap into them so I would build forts and play in them. We also had mountains that were fun to wander but we had to keep an eye open for cougars and rattle snakes. Now I wander the streets of my city, but I don't build forts anymore. But some people have. I have a new neighbor who builds elaborate cardboard structures everynight in the same place and tears it down every morning before the workers come. And it's always a nice change of pace to leave the city and wander in the forest. I hope I never stop wandering.

I never did. My mum never let me out of her sight whenever I was outside, so I never really got to do a lot of wandering around the neighbourhood. Although that might have been a good thing, since I lived in a pretty dangerous area.

When i was 4-8 i used to play outside with my sister a lot there was a forest nearby which we sometimes wandered into (though the most dangerous animal i have ever seen there was a near harmless snake) I would say that someone should be with you but its normal enough to wander around...
