I twist my hair into knots i have to cut or rip out.

ever since i can remember i have twisted my hair into knots so bad i have to cut or rip them out. I started twisting the front of my hair and some how moved to behind the ears. i dont know why the hell i can't quit i've tried but i think its just a subconcious act when i'm thinking really hard. i've heard of smarter people having weird habits when they concentrate really hard and was always told i was smart and put in higher classes but i'm not einstein or anything. i mostly just want to see if anyone else had this habit and kicked it or knows a way to kick it. i have long hair but its getting shorter quicker than it is growing long. i also bite my nails but that doesn't bother me cause it saves me the trimming work!

Oh MAN! I loved to do that. I use to rip my hair out when I was a little kid because it felt good and it was freaking fun! But I don't do that anymore haha.

  • O my god I did that. I used to do it all da time. But then I got a buzz cut and I had a huge bald spot. I had to cover it up and that was enough to make me stop so quit before something like that happens to you.

I'm really glad I found the site. Really enjoying everybody's stories of normalness!!!!

When I was young 8 months old I lost my mom. So my grandparents were taking care of me when I was about four and I was twirling my hair and ripping it out. They were finding clumps of hair by the bed. I remember going to the doctor and the doctor told them put mittens on and then tape them so I can't take them off when I sleep. (Seriously might have done this like four times before I fell asleep) Of course it didn't work! I'm 51 years old I still twirl my hair. I snap my hair too. If I'm really stressed out I'll just snap away and snap away. For me now it's kind of a trigger of okay you're sitting here snapping your hair like crazy what the hell is going on!! I don't look at it as a bad thing like the doctors did and my grandparents did. I mean I don't know about you but one thing I've learned about my hair is it's growing it's always growing it's never stopped growing!! Lol it's extremely rare that I'll do it to the point of a clump of hair now. Only I definitely still twirl it's a comforting thing. I don't believe it's abnormal at all I believe we all find little ways of comfort. My sisters used to joke around saying the only reason why my hair is wavy is because I twirl my hair! Lol Just like biting your nails sucking your thumb! I've made it 51 years and I've never seen somebody's thumb sucking hair twirling any of that getting in the way of their normal functions of life. I'm a mom with three kids and I have a grandson! To the doctors that want to freak out the parents they need to shut the hell up!! I don't even want to go over what they used to put on my thumb so I wouldn't suck it anymore!! That's the great thing about humans! That's the great thing about being normal! We will naturally find something to comfort ourselves and survive and grow to be great people!! LOVE THE TWIRL EMBRACE YOUR HUMANNESS!!

Used to do it, too. Twist the back of my hair, when it was longer, just behind my ears, into a knot, using a pen, pencil, silverware..Anything strong that wouldn't break. Get a good knot going, and pull/yank my hair out into strands or clumps. I admit, it felt good.

Then, the hot blonde woman who cut my hair noticed, and asked me "Are you pulling your hair out back here? It looks thinner". She knew I was, and wasn't stopping, so, made me a flirty little side deal: Stop pulling so the hair would grow in full again, and, next cut, she wouldn't wear the usual cover that kept hair off of her (and guys from leering down her shirt or tank top), and cut my hair as-is, which was usually in tight jeans and a tank top. And, since I particularly loved the scalp massages she'd give with her long nails, she'd go a little extra on that. I was sold, and disciplined myself to not twist and rip out anymore. She made good on her promise, too.

Totally normal. I've done it my whole life when I am tired, concentrating, stressed, energized, not concentrating, and feeling loose and free. When I was a kid my mom didn't like it and now that I'm married my wife doesn't like it. My dad embraced it though and gave me the nickname Chief Twisted Hair and even made me a wooden plaque with "Chief" on it. I don't think about it as I do it. It just happens. Just enjoy it and love the glorious twisting! Hair twisters unite!

I have also been twirling my hair into knots for 10 + years. When i was younger the knots would be so huge i had to rip them out. Ive been trying to control it but i do it when im bored, angry, nervous, focusing and more. Its very difficult to stop but ive learned to make less severe knots so i loose less hair and i found that wearing my hair down helps alot with not making knots. Hopefully i can teach myself to stop all together. Im glad to see im not the only one suffering with this weird habit.

If you're a girl, than that's kinda a problem causeeeeee your hair is gonna be ugly and you don't wanna go bald D:

If you're a guy, it's still a bad habit but at least you can get a buzz cut... Or go bald lmaoo Idk.

If you were soooo smart, you'd figure out a way to stop twisting your hair into knots. Better yet, why dont you use a comb & conditioner instead of cutting them out.

that's nasty, pulling your hair out or twisting knots in it is a serious disease, i've lost about a quarter of my hair from it.
