I told a story to my black friend that may be racist.

I was hanging out with some girls from work at one of their apartments. We were having a few drinks and some good conversation. Among the girls is a black girl that I work with who makes everything about race. I don't remember how we got into the conversation, but it lead me into a story about how in high school a group of black girls used to pick on me. My high school was segregated and because I got into a fight with a few black girls, they all seemed to team up on me. Now I feel bad that I shared this because I'm afraid she is going to think that I am inappropriate. Also, there were about 7 girls there and myself and another girl were the only ones who were white. Is it normal to share that stuff with black friends?

    If they're your friends, they shouldn't care. The story itself wasn't racist, you were just pointing out the fact that girls used to pick on you, and they just happened to be black. If you aren't racist and didn't imply any racism, then you shouldn't have anything to worry about.

    Ahaha. This reminds me of myself with my friends. I don't tell racist stories, but I get a kick out of the jokes. (Especially about Italians, since I am myself.) I don't think it is normal to blurt out semi-racist stories to friends who always lead topics to race itself, (Making it noticeable that it is one of their sensitive topics.). But in your case, your conversation kind of drifted in that direction so I'd say it's fine. All you really mentioned was that you were bullied by certain black girls, which doesn't mean you discriminate the African/African American race in general. They are your friends, you should relax and try not to feel so racist.

    Well if it was random then yeah I guess it would be inappropriate, but other than that you should be free to say whatever the hell you want. ;)

    lol yes its normal! i'm not racist but say racist jokes about black people with my black friends and they all laugh. besides it was a story of what happened in the past. i don't think she'll get offended or think it was inappropriate at all. =)
