I thought stunning animals erased suffering

Until today, I thought that when animals in slaughterhouses get stunned, that they become 100℅ unconscious and have zero suffering. Today for the first time, I read on a couple of websites that the stunning doesn't always work and that they do suffer. Is that really true? Until now, I wasn't against slaughterhouses because I thought that the stunning of the pigs, cows, etc., completely erased suffering. I can't handle the thought of any animal suffering, and I'm not sure if I want to keep eating meat if they are.

To be fair right after the stunning they tend to cut thier necks so if they weren’t knockrd out they will just bleed to uncontioustess in five seconds.

    • I know someone who had told me about this meat packing plant hiring (and good pay), since I'm looking for a job. But I've not filled the application or seeked it yet because I want to be 100℅ sure there's no suffering from the animals, or I'm not interested. I know I'm being sensitive towards the animals.

If you're squeamish about it don't take the job. Or take the job and quit if you don't like it.

  • Nothing ever works 100% of the time. But not all websites on these issues can be trusted. My suggestion would be to contact a slaughterhouse directly and inquire on the process, maybe even find a way to tour one.

    • You may be right about the websites I read possibly being inaccurate.

    • No, I don't want to tour a slaughterhouse and see it up close. I've already seen the inside of them on YouTube videos, and I don't want to see any more now after reading that they may actually be suffering. But like I said up top, it didn't bother me as much when I believed the animals were being made completely unconscious with no suffering.

      • How will you know for sure, if your evidence is biased videos on Youtube from unknown or seedy sources? Maybe the slaughterhouses in your area are not like that but you'll never know because you refused to tour them. Shooting yourself in the foot OP.

They'd obviously be biased the other way though.

Who cares? As long as the fucker ends up dead and on your plate then none of that bullshit matters.

    • It's true that most people don't care, the majority of Americans are meat eaters. I've known people who have worked in slaughterhouses, and they weren't just watching the slaughtering, they were taking part in it everyday. And like I said up top, I didn't care as much when I thought that no animal was suffering. I know that many Americans don't care, not just with the slaughterhouse workers, but also all the hunters, taxidermists, etc.

Hunters care if the animal is killed cleanly (mainly for meat purposes) but we want the animal to die as soon as we shoot it. A drop dead shot is good for us. When I shoot a deer I give it an extra bullet to the skull if it’s still alive.

        • Yeah, that's understandable, make it as fast as possible. I wasn't bothered by slaughterhouses that stunned the animals until I read something today about how the animals may really be suffering even when stunned. I was always bothered by the places that didn't stun them first. I had considered looking at employment at a meat processing company that a friend told me a couple of times was hiring (because I'd been looking for a job), but I wanted to see some videos on what the work entailed. And I also wanted to see and be sure that no animal was suffering, and I believed that the stunning was completely eliminating any suffering. Until the site I read today.

this can happen, but usually only by inexperienced workers or people who haven't been working there long. if the animal is not stunned correctly, they will stun it again until it's unconsciousness. nothing works to 100% efficiency, so there are a couple of farm animals that might experience a bit more stress over the others if the first stun fails.

Some suffer before the slaughterhouse. Being crammed into tiny pens with no space to roam until slaughter day doesn't sound fun. If you don't want to eat animals that have suffered, your options are limited.

A friend of mine worked in a slaughterhouse and he didnt never mention stunning them. He mentioned shoving a rod in their spinal cord or something like that. Im sure you could find some videos on youtube from in a slaughterhouse.
