I thought peanuts grew on trees!

Apparently peanuts grow underground from these little shrubby type plants. My whole life I thought they grew on trees. I guess because a lot of other nuts grow on trees.

I thought they grew on trees too! 21
I knew peanuts didn't grow on trees. 34
I had no opinion either way. Now I know! 35

    • You live in the south where they grow, right? How do you like your peanuts? I like honey roasted, I can't really handle anything else because of the texture.

Indeed I do. I live a tenth of a mile from a farm that grows peanuts, among other things.

I like peanuts in all forms. But my favorite is...

        • I had a feeling you'd say boiled! Every time I've drove in the south I've seen signs for boiled peanuts. I have never had a boiled peanut, maybe someday I will. I'll check out your link to see what they're all about.

I'm sure as a kid I thought this too. I was under the impression that they grew on low to the ground vines. I don't remember my schooling ever teaching it this way.

I really hope this is a troll post. Of course, in England recently, people were asked to identify "haggis" and many thought it was a Highlands animal!

I did not know this! This reminds me of when I used to think that pineapples grew from a tree... Turns out they grow from a leafy plant on the ground. Silly me.

I didn't know they were called legumes, though I suppose I probably should have. I did know they don't grow on trees, though.

I knew they're not technically nuts, but I didn't know how they grow.
Thanks for the information, I'll try to make use of it somehow.

This might seem like a stupid comment but they do still sort of grow on trees, there still connected to the tree which grows above ground, there not grown from the roots then a top part grows from the ground.

    • It's not a tree, it's a small bushy type plant and when harvested the entire plant w/ roots is taken up so a peanut plant usually won't live more than 1 season.
