I think this is the best generation for music

Personally, I think that this generation is by far the best in terms of music. Now, I know what you're thinking, "How can you say that when we have all this crap like Justin Bieber and Nicki Minaj on the radio?", but I think that people are missing the most important part: You can find almost any mainstream song - modern, retro, oldies, etc. - on YouTube for free legally (thanks to the copyright holders placing ads), and legal music online nowadays is cheap and convenient. In addition, our music tastes don't have to be governed by one single medium (i.e. television channel corporations), and instead we can go online and find whatever suits our tastes. Back then you would have to buy a casette/record/disc/etc. that were relatively expensive to nowadays, and if it breaks, too bad. Now you at most just need to pay a cheap fare, and the file you have can be copied onto as many devices as you want so if one file fails, you still have others. In addition, at least a large portion of the time, the band just posts it onto YouTube or other sites where you can listen to it without having to pay a cent. I hear a lot of kids saying "I was born in the wrong generation for music", but I think they were born in the right generation for music.

I know what you mean. It's amazing being able to get virtually everything instantly, and anywhere.

There is something I miss slightly however.....

I am old enough to remember when certain records were 'rare' or 'deleted' (seventies and eighties I'm talking about) and I can still almost taste the thrill of having to get a certain piece of vinyl imported from another country, being the envy of other music lovers and being selective about who was allowed to tape it. That Devo 45, the long deleted Byrds LP, the Beatles album in mono.

This made the music seem more special: the reward of the hunt enhanced the whole experience.

As far as access to music is concerned you're absolutely right. It's awesome!

In terms of recorded sound, you're right. If you are "born in this generation" for music you might as well have been born in *every* generation for music all at once, because you've got access to whatever you want.

I'm not sure recorded sound is all music is, though. Music has the power to connect people culturally. Music is the aural representation of specific times and places, converted into emotional energy. I think when people say they miss older music, they mean the culture surrounding the music. They miss live shows of bands that not longer exist, watching their scene as it expands and unfolds before their eyes. Recorded sound is the attempted reduction of all that cultural energy into a simple audio file. No wonder some people miss being there for real.

Most of my musician friends and I do not like the "digital" sound. It's tinny and has little depth, compared to analog.
But as far as accessing music, of course you are quite correct. It's just that it doesn't sound quite right when you get it from a digital source.

Vinyl certainly has a warmer sound.

Just because it can, a digital medium ofter over-emphasises the top and bottom end of the sound spectrum at the expense of the middle, which is where the warmth of the sound comes from.

I'm waiting for a bright future where everybody just plays the Hyper-Xylo-Holophone. Golden days are ahead!

I agree, things like spotify are amazing. no matter how obscure somethink is it'll have it even major organ and the adding machine. as for the music, a few years ago I wouldn't have agreed but if you look for it some amazing things are being done. A lot of the time now such bands and albums are being pushed into the mainstream from critical sucsess like deafheaven or good kid maaad city

It is in fact normal, but please don't limit yourself in music, music is amazing from all time periods, just check out all music with an open mind, you'll not like some of it, but you will come out with more good music than bad.

For access, you are right. But a lot of music today isn't even music.
