I think my vegetarian friend is cracking.

Ok so let me just let you know that I care about my friend and I want her to be happy so don't say anything about minding my own business. Alright now that's out of the way let me tell you what happened.
We were at this luncheon with food from different cultures. I was eating chicken with rice and recommending it to my non-vege friend. Then my non-vege friend (let's call her Molly) said "I feel so sorry for you Lily (pretend name for vegetarian friend) a lot of these foods have meat! Then Lily just looked down sadly and nodded her head sort of smiling.

She also has dreams of herself eating meat. But she loves animals! This girl gets really pissed when we talk about people hunting or like some other animal thing. She will cry when she hears about animal abuse. But she isn't like some sort of attention whore. She really doesn't like it when people ask her "WHY ARE YOU VEGETARIAN?!" "HOW DOES IT FEEL TO NOT BE ABLE TO EAT MEAT??"

I remember when she was not a vegetarian she loved ham, salami, chicken nuggets, and burgers. I'm not talking always getting it on the menu. I mean "YESS THEY HAVE CHICKEN NUGGETS!!'

If your a vegetarian did you ever feel this way? She's on the very edge of cracking but she hates that fact. How can I help her???

It depends on the type of vegetarian. My friend is a vegetarian for health reasons. I'm a vegetarian because of what I believe.

Do I suffer the occasional meat-crisis? Yes, but it's more than occasional. My body wants the flesh of something that once lived. Fried chicken, lamb chops with mint sauce, cheeseburger, lasagne, chorizo, seekh kebab, bacon sandwich, roast beef with gravy made from the juices and Yorkshire Puddings made with animal fat, mulligatawny soup, haggis, rump steak, lemon chicken, pepperoni pizza...

What keeps me on the straight and narrow is having certain meals that give me the same feeling as eating meat but which have no meat in them. I have four or five of those. And then there is always meat substitute. Quorn is great, as is soy mince. They're so close to chicken and to beef mince (if cooked right) that I honestly believe there's little reason for anyone to eat meat these days (apart from for health).

I agree with dappled's first line alot.

I am a vegetarian because i am an animal lover and dont like the way in which animals are slaughtered.

I sometimes have thoughts such as 'i could eat chicken right about now'
But it is merely thought and i would never act on it. I honestly believe i will never eat meat again. If your friend really wants to eat meat again then she is going to and there isnt much you can do to stop her i suppose, its got to be her choice.

As dappled said, quorn is a great choice and there really isnt much difference between it and the actual meat it is replacing. (i have a friend who is anti vegetarian, and he couldnt even tell the difference when i was eating quorn chicken nuggest one time) so maybe as a suggestion get her on the quorn :)

Quorn is brilliant, isn't it? I had it breaded once and made into an escalope just like you'd do with chicken with a salad and some lemon juice on it. I couldn't believe how good it was as a substitute. I honestly thought about checking the packet because I wondered if I was eating chicken. :)

I've had two incarnations of my vegetarianism and I can see why she's cracking.

In my first incarnation, I had no health problems that I was aware of and I did it mainly for "animal rights". I got allot of bullshit from not only my peers at the time, but also grown ass adults. The stereotypical questions were a pain in the ass and my family was constantly flipping out at me over it. It was like I had become some form of oddity in a land of meat eaters. People were constantly wanting to know why I chose to become a vegetarian, how I got protein or proper nutrients, etc. Ugh! I only stopped because my mother thought I was bruising as a result, which I wasn't.

My second and current incarnation was caused by a number of bizarre allergic reactions to food. I realized that I can't have any meat. I nearly went to the ER from Tilapia and I had a curious reaction to shrimp. Then, I started having allergic reactions to land meat. At first I thought it was only poultry, but then the intolerance "spread" to other meats. I eventually stopped eating meat all together. At some point, I thought that my reactions were caused by what the meat was being fed (grains/GMOs). A few weeks ago, I went to my store and bought organic grass-fed ground beef. Low and behold! I got my hopes up for absolutely nothing and ended up getting a allergic reaction that could've spread had I not taken a anti-histamine! I've been criticized by my family for my diet, but they've recently have been letting up a bit. I haven't had troubles with other people, because no one knows that I'm a vegetarian. I don't tell them and thankfully I haven't been in a situation where I'd have to explain it. Can you imagine the funny looks I'd get if I told them about GMO's and being allergic to land and sea meats?

My point is that it can be very stressful to be a vegetarian. If you want to help her, be as kind and supportive as you possibly can. Don't criticize her as it'll only make it worse. Find her a vegetarian support group. Read more on the subject. There's many companies that have vegan meat substitutes like Quorn and Gardien, but the thing about Gardien is that they use canola oil which is extremely unhealthy. I can't remember what Quorn uses but they do use mushrooms. A recipe book could also be very beneficial to her, etc.

    Good Luck!

Thanks for this! I would probably be a vegetarian if I could stand not being able to eat bacon. She gets teased a lot and is dragged into heavy animal debates that she doesn't want to be in. I'll talk to her about Quorn. Once again thanks!

Buy a chicken as a pet, accidentally kill it and say "don't let her death be in vain, it's what she would have wanted"

I can see why she is cracking. I respect vegetarians, and hope they can all stay meat free. however I could not stand that lifestyle myself. I am an avid hunter and fisher, and have meat with almost every single meal I eat. There is something so satisfying about enjoying a meal with your family that you provided with your patience and hard word. Deer is also much healthier than beef, and in my opinion, has a better taste!

As a kid I was meat crazy, like all of my meals contained meat, and then I'd eat meat as a snack on top of that! I was a little meat fiend!

I've been a veggie for 9 years now, and as far as I'm aware I haven't ate anything meat related, although it's extremely likely that I've ate something made with an animal without knowing.

Anyway, despite being a meat addict as a kid, I'm genuinely not even tempted to eat meat. Infact, I'm so disinterested that I think there's something wrong with me. Of course bacon smells nice, but the only temptation is the memory of meat itself as opposed to any craving to chow on a drumstick etc.

The only thing I miss are spare ribs, god I used to go crazy for those!

First off its really rude that people are heckling her about being vegetarian. Your friend has a right to not eat meat as they have right to. Also thinking that it had different culture that is kind of odd.

Did they have Indian food? Since I know for a fact they tend to avoid most meat in the Indian diet. I myself could probobly never become vegetarian. It takes some serious commitment to just suddenly cut out meat out of your diet. I am not sure what to do about your friend but just be supportive.

A lot of vegetarians do quit being vegetarian since they can not take it. However like I said Indian diet does not have a lot of meat in it so if you have not looked into that try it. In fact in the McDonald they don't even have real meat for a lot of the patties. The patties is a bunch of vegetables mashed together and fried in a veggie patties. I have eaten veggie patties before and they actually taste really good.
