I think marriage should be removed from the law
A lot of people want gay marriage to be recognized. Others want to keep traditional marriage in the law between one man and one woman. I personally think the law should do away with "marriage". Don't get me wrong, I think marriage is a good and important thing. However, I think they should just replace it with a system called "civil union", which allows for any 2 consenting individuals to be joined, with no indication that it is a romantic and/or sexual relationship. Even two blood brothers can get a civil union, though incest will remain illegal. However, they will get the same benefits as married couples, such as adoption and finance. Whether the union constitutes a "marriage" should be left up to religions and society.
I know some will say stuff like "marriage is sacred and therefore it must be controlled by law". Baptism and bar mitzvahs are sacred yet they aren't bound by law. As far as the law is concerned, 13-14 year olds aren't adults yet.
So my proposal is to ditch marriage entirely in the law. People can still get "married", but it will have no legal status. One can be "married" yet be outside of a legal civil union, or one can be in a civil union, but not married.
Is it normal to hold this view?
