I stop breathing when i sleep

It doesn't happen very often (Maybe once every couple weeks), but I wonder if maybe it happens more often than I think but I don't notice it because I don't wake up. The times that I have noticed it are scary because I'm unsure of how long I haven't been breathing and I think "What if I didn't wake up?" I'm familiar with sleep apnea, but I have my doubts about that for some reason. I guess it's possible because of what I said before (How I might not notice it because I'm asleep).

GET A sleep study done. if you're waking up because you're not breathing, that means you definitely DO have apnea of some kind. most likely you're doing it alot more than you can tell. do you ever wake up with a headache, have frequent nightmares, get up to use the bathroom alot or wake up in a panic? until then, don't sleep on your back. you'll probably get a cpap machine and you'll feel alot better:) sleep apnea IS serious and yes, people sometimes don't wake up.

Bad advise about not going to MD. Get a sleep study now.

It's probably sleep apnea. It's not normal and it needs to be treated. It can be dangerous . As in brain damage.

Happens to me too. I always take shallow breaths during the day. At night, sometimes I realize I forgot to breathe. I guess there's something wrong with my brain.

Sounds like sleep apnea to me, the episodes where you notice it yourself is probably just the tip of the iceberg. Get an appointment with a doctor asap so you can get a full sleep-study done (polysomnography - your breathing, blood pressure, brain activity, oxygen levels and movements during sleep is monitored at the hospital). If you indeed turn out to have sleep apnea, there's plenty of treatment options available.

  • Well if you do have the apeana-spelled that wrong then yes go get checked by a doctor...but breathing is an involuntay act, so you may stop & then pass-out. But your breathing will come back, unless you have the sleep apeana...<spelled wrong>

It's not unnormal. But it's definately not healthy. See a doctor.

  • It's almost like "I forget to breathe." It doesn't feel like anything is blocking it, but being so tired when it happens, I'm not sure!

I can say I have experienced this, do you have asthma? That can cause it, but get checked out at your local gp

My husband has sleep apnea. I'm constantly shaking him to make him roll over. Sometimes he startles me awake when he does start breathing on his own. He coughs, chokes and squirms alot. He says he's not aware that he does it. I try to get him to see a doc. He says NAW, what for. To continue living I say!! So, see a doc.

Sleep Apnea is most likely the reason for it. My parents friend says this happens to him and his doctor said it's sleep apnea. Get it checked out.

And by the way, it's normal, but doesn't happen to everyone necessarily
