A very bigoted white guy called a very good black friend of mine a nasty racial name (N word +) behind my friend's back. This pissed me the fuck off. So I grabbed this ass wipe by his collar and spit in his face. Was this an overreaction, or a normal response to a good friend being totally disrespected for no reason at all? I'm white by the way.

Your friend shouldn't have said what he did. Especially considering your black friend probably isn't the word that was used.
I'm curious as to why you, being white, found it necessary to attack another white person over something like this?
Just because some people are idiots doesn't mean you have to resort to being disgusting yourself. All you do is put yourself on a lower level.
The right thing to do would have been ignoring racist idiots like that and being the mature and reasonable person, not acting as much of a disgusting idiot as that guy was.

Should you have spit in his face? Not exactly.
Do I feel bad for him? Hell no.
Do I think you're a pretty awesome friend for doing so? Yes.
Don't think you're in the wrong here - he is. Violence isn't the answer, but then again, I don't think anyone really cares if this guys gets some spit in his face. He deserves it.
Props for standing up for your friend, but you need to think about the consequences of your actions, before you do it.
You realize that in many states here in us of a, spitting in someones face is assault worthy of a night or 2 in jail, with so many people with HIV and all.
I think it was an overreaction, but at the same time the guy had it coming. You should've just told him to go fuck himself. I have a hard time believing this didn't end in violence because spitting in another man's face is a low blow in which would usually lead to worse things.
