I say what to someone, even if i know what they said.

I dont know why i do it. Someone will be talking to me, ill hear every syllable and for some reason i end up going what? Then i repeat exactly what they just said to me. My friends get really annoyed and think im playing one big game and doing it on purpose but it just happens.

Does this happen to anyone else?

its because people need to take in the info that was given to them and they say "what" as a way to give them time to think up an answer. everyone i know says it, i say it, and its weird how we all work. but normal :)

I do that too but I really don't know why. I try to stop but I can't.

haha I do the same thing, but for me its a little different, the words people say take about a split second to actually register in my mind so I say 'what?" and then realise what they said, lol. Don't worry, its pretty normal

maybe you're stalling. think of what you want to say before you speak, or make some other hesitant sound that doesn't literally mean "repeat or clarify what you just said". the thinking before you speak part is hard for everyone but when it works out for you it's totally worth it. or maybe your uncle is deaf. when i spent too much time around my deaf uncle i would say "huh" or "what" all the time. his kids did it too.

I agree with them, I like the extra thinking time lol

I think the more my husband wonders if I have a hearing problem the less I let 'what' be my go-to word.

I used to do this an awful lot but once I began focusing on it and making a constant effort to stop it, it went away.
All you have to do it think before you speak and this problem will be gone.

I work with a girl who does that, she always says what then answers you I wouldn't mind so much if she said pardon lol. I say it sometimes because it seems to take a second for me to prosess what people have said I guess Im slow lol

I can't say for myself, but my best friend does this all the time. I used to think he was just buying time to think up of a good answer, but I guess it's just him. I personally think it's perfectly normal, though. Like when you're listening to someone, then completely forget what they just said.
