I pretend to talk on my phone

I pretend to talk on my phone while im walking to my car, while im shopping, while im waiting in line...etc anything where im not doing anything
i pretend to have a conversation with someone, and i go into detail i make up scenerios, make up lines, laugh, all the things u would do in a normal conversation

i pretty much f!cked up one time when i was "talking" on my phone and it started ringing loud my face turned bright red then i retreated into hiding wit my head down bcuz the ppl around me knew i wasnt talking to anyone...

is this normal?

A lot of women do that...its good protection in parking lots and while pumping gas...and it also feeds your insecurities in other times.

I used to do it. When I was leaving work this girl I didnt like always tried to walk with me across the screet to go to the parking lot. But, I was worried that the phone would ring so I called my voicemail and talked to that. haha

    • Yeah I used to do the same thing back when I lived in Los Angeles, and that was because I didnt want to be approached by street bums and cons....plus i did it while waiting for the bus so that ppl wouldnt think to kidnap me since i had company waiting for me

I also used to do that while waiting in line at the spaguetti factory they have such long lines!

  • Your story sometimes does somewhat does sound kinda weird, but i sometimes do the same thing like when I'm watching my brother and he's misbehaving, i pretend that I'm on the phone with my mom or dad and tell him that they said he has to go to his room

I think it's something quite a few people do when they feel nervous about talking to others. And to avoid the embarrassment of the phone ringing loudly, you could put it on silent. But there's no reason for you to stop doing it, if it makes you feel comfortable going out in public. =o)

I pretend to text sometimes. Just to look buisy.

I do that sometimes. When I am in a situation where there are others around and I feel uncomfortable (for example, with a group of people that I don't know well and I can think of nothing to say, I might pretend to be on the mobile to pass a bit of time). Pretending to text is useful too sometimes.
I only do this maybe once a fortnight, and not just for the sake of it.
    Why do you do this?

I do that too, to avoid talking to people on the street. I mean the bums who are constantly coming up to me EVERY DAY for money. Get a job already, people!!!

This is abnormal and some kind of modern day avoidance technique. I have to admit I am shocked how many normal votes this got. I will never look at someone talking on their phone the same way again.

I vote no, pretending to be on your phone or using your phone isn't normal my example would be scrolling through your music for no reason, walking without looking up, holding your headphones cord that doesn't have a mic on it up to your lips pretending to be responding to someone, switching songs on your mp3 player before they reach the end I can go on for a hour, these different behaviors are related to social anxiety and paranoia a part of a group called mental illness.

i don't necessarily have very low self-esteem or anything (or maybe one could argue), but as i step into any room or grocery shop and people start staring at me ( or i feel like people are staring at me). i pull my cellphone out of my pocket and pretend like i just got a text, and keep staring at the phone as if i am reading something, mostly i just go on google and actually read something ( its very hard for me to pretend to read when i'm actually not reading something, and i do feel silly after 3 minutes or so. Sometimes i keep looking at the time on my phone as if i have to be somewhere smh. I've never pretended to talk to someone though ( i would imagine i would feel silly in a matter of seconds doing that, plus i wouldn't know what to say lol). But don't worry by the looks of the comments above the majority does it. Its easier to play with your phone or stare at your phone instead of complete strangers i guess.

There's a great bit in the film Alan Partridge: Alpha Papa where he pretends to be speaking on his phone to avoid having to say goodbye to a work colleague, and it starts ringing. I have pretended to be on the phone to not have to speak to people I do not like, but my ringer's always switched off.

I'm too self-conscious to, essentially, talk to myself in public. However if I didn't feel silly in doing so, I would definitely pretend to talk on the phone. Instead, I often pretend I'm texting somebody.
    I'd say it's normal.

Oh. Man. That must have been a painful moment.

Yeah, I occasionally pretend to talk on my phone when I'm avoiding talking to people. I normally pretend to text though, just to appear occupied.

if you do this because your uncomfortable around others looking not busy then you should get an ipod or something but always be aware of your environment. because people that pay attention only to there phone or ipod can get seriously injured

I don't think it's normal to do that all the time...maybe as a security thing. I can see doing that on the way to the car or somewhere as a security thing.

I'm surprised how many people do that too. Pretend to text, maybe, but having a fake conversation is odd. But whatever

  • No it isnt normal if you wanted to talk to somebody why dont you just call someone? lol I mean its easy and someone was already calling to talk to you.
