I never learned about hair in math class

I fit the stereotypical asian, nerdy guy image pretty well. Although I just turned 18, I probably look and act like a thirteen year old. But I'm working on that. I've never cared much about appearance, but recently I've noticed that the barber I've been going to for years gives me pretty bad haircuts.
Plus, I've always been scared of getting my hair cut because I never know what to say. I walk in and sit down: "So, what would you like today?" "A haircut please." "What kind?" "Erm... a haircut please." Then the barber looks at me funny and proceeds to give me something boring.
So because this is my senior year, I think I'll try getting something a bit more noticeable, at a place somewhere a little more expensive. First question: Is it even normal for a guy like me to care about this instead of fretting over colleges or something.
I have very little idea of what "something more expensive than my neighborhood barber" even means. I've seen those salon/spa things that say [Unisex] on the front, but seem to only cater to scary old women. What is there in between?
If this is normal, I still have no idea what to do in terms of appointments and choosing styles and such. Can I just let the stylist/enhanced barber do what he or she thinks is right? What even goes with a big round pudgy face and black Chinese hair. Finally, what kind of cash are we talking about here?
So I guess my main question is this: Would it be normal to see a guy like me in anywhere fancier than a barbershop?
Thanks for any advice. Maybe I should go back and do what I'm good at. You know, sciency stuff.

look online for pictures of how you want your hair done, and then take it in and ask for something like that. I did. Basic barbers can do that kind of stuff.

Go to the mall, and walk into one of the salons there. They get guys or by some weird chance they do not it won't be the embarassing tragedy you are envisioning. Just tell the stylist what you told us here, you are looking for something a little trendy and interesting and they will surely be able to help you out..it is their job. have 40-50 bucks. and tip them!

It would be totally normal to see you in a salon. Besides, if you're worried about appearing metrosexual... metrosexuality is very attractive.

I am a stylist. Asian hair is a toughy as you know. I recommend that you befriend some older people in your community that are in the hip crowd. dont have any idea how to do that? well go to areas that asian people congregate, look around and if you see a guy who is in his early 20's & had a great cut go ask him "hey man who cuts your hair, my barber is terrible!" have a good laugh and he should understand. any asian who hasnt had a bad hair experience is lucky. Its like the guy said above, lots of stylist just try to make it look good enough to get you out the door. And you can usually tell by the excessive combing and spraying that they are trying to hide flaws. Get recommendations a good cut and you'll never regret it. and no you deserve it. do it for yourself. and that is how I always look for a new stylist by the way. When I want a new cut i find someone with the exact cut and ask who did it. Lee with 20yrs exp in hair

It is normal to be worrying about these things as long as its not in an obsessive way. Getting a good looking haircut will definetly boost your confidence and everyone needs a change once in a while. Walk into a neigborhood salon and see if you like their style and ask them what they think. If you like the idea go for it!

well, go to those japanese salon. they are the best for asian style. i suggest browsing for male hairstyle online. print it out and show it to the hair stylist. japanese salon can be such a rip off, around $40 for cut, but you have to pay extra for washing, blow drying, & tips. tell them what kinda style you like. the one that you have to wake up in the morning putting gel or wax on it (jay chou sorta emo style), or the one that looks just fine although you just roll out of bed. dude, it's college, invest some money if you wanna get laid, have girlfriend or at least make friends. i find it attractive if a guy cares about his look, especially the F.O.B looking one. ignore people who say metrosexual is so gay.

What is your hair like currently? Try getting your hair cut so that the sides are shorter, and the top longer and styled upwards or something. Maybe like this

    but with the side shorter.

The problem with the barber/stylist, I've always found, is they the spend a lot of time fussing with your hair to make it look good. And it usually does look good -- for about a day.
The you sleep on it and wash it in the morning. Now, just how much time to you want to spend fussing with your hair each and every morning when you are half asleep and late for work or class?
For me, the answer turned out to be "not much."

It's normal, but if you go, don't expect miracles. I went to get my hair thinned at one of those unisex places and they fucked it up bigtime >.< I cut my own hair normally, but I wouldn't recommend that unless you're really confident with your hands and know exactly what you're going to do. Whatever you decide, barber or salon, make sure you tell them what you want. If you don't, they'll just cut your hair in the style they're most comfortable with, regardless of whether it suit you. Google male hairstyles and see if there's any that appeal. Do you have any style-savvy friends you could run a preferred cut past first?
