I never clean out my ears.

Ear wax is natural and useful.

You shouldn't use cotton buds (q-tips) inside the ear, only to clean the external parts around the opening. It can be dangerous and counter-intuitive to push a cotton bud inside the ear canal - but for some reason (particularly in the US) it's a bad habit passed down from generation to generation.

If you have a painful build up of wax within the ear it's advisable to visit a doctor who can use a syringe; the syringe doesn't suck the wax out, instead it allows a few drops of liquid (commonly hydrogen peroxide) into the ear which loosens the hard wax allowing it to trickle out when your head is tilted. You can in fact do this at home, which might be advisable if you're prone to build ups, but make sure you follow proper instructions.

I have never cleaned my ears with a cotton bud. Whenever I have a shower, the water tends to do most of the work in cleaning my ears anyway. I can hear perfectly well and have never had a build up of wax or indeed any problem at all with my ears.

I never need to. The one time I needed to clean an ear was when I came off a flight with a mild ear infection. I went to the doctor a week later because it still hurt. He looked and said it was packed with wax because of the infection. He suggested that I first go home and put a couple of drops of olive oil in it, come back if it doesn't help. Turns out it worked, my ear was completely cleared up after that.

Occasionally I get a flake on the outside or some leaks out from the shower so I'll give my ears a wipe around and a little into the entrance with tissue paper, but I never properly stick anything in there.

I don't know if it's normal, but if your ears don't bother you, you probably shouldn't clean them. When I clean them, I usually just use my fingers. Sometimes I do it too much and scratch up my ears though. I don't like using q-tips because they just push the dirt around for me... they do feel nice though.

I use a Q-tip and never have had a problem. One great thing about it, is that I almost always get an eargasm. The sensation is incredible that I feel like drooling lol.

I have in ear headphones so I constantly clean them. Use anything naturally oily as it breaks down the wax

You're actually not supposed to clean your ears with cotton swabs. If you're not careful you can pop your eardrum. Also, wax naturally finds its way out of your ear so it's really not a necessary habit.

My ex cleaned his all the time. He puts hydrogen peroxide on the swab to help get the wax out. One day he woke me up in a panic.. the end of the swab had falling off inside of his ear. We had to go to the ER at 3am to get it out.

You should clean your ears, because if you don't you won't be able to hear well and doctors will have to take it out

That's pretty gross. I use them all the time, I've probably jabbed my ear drum on accident several dozen times. Yeah it's a sharp pain that causes me to retract. But guess what, my hearing is fine and my ears are clean.

Ear wax grosses me out so much! I don't know why. It is just one of my pet peeves. My husband never cleans out his ears. Ew!

I use Q-tips in my ears after every shower and I've never once poked my eardrums. I start by circling the entrance of the canal and slowly move the cotton bud inward, but I stop about half way to my eardrum. It feels good cleaning them and my ear canals are completely free of wax build-up. Win win.

I always use qtips, you're not supposed to but I do it anyway. I've never put it in far enough to hit my eardrum though.

I always use Q-tips. I actually clean my ears everyday because I use earphones all the day so I want to keep my ears clean. And I just love the feeling when I clean my ears.
