I need a career change!

I am currently at the point in my job where I feel I cannot stand it any more, and the thought of been in the same place in a few years time terrifies me.

No need to go in to great detail, but I work in an IT company, doing software support for our clients (As well as a bit of sales on the side). I find it so mind-numbingly boring! This is my first job since leaving school (I’m 19 at the moment), I did about a years worth of work based training before they employed me for full time work.

The problem is, I really don't have a clue what I would like to be doing instead of my current job. I fancy going back to college and trying out a few different courses. However, this seems like a bad idea to me, seeing how you get paid next to nothing whilst on the courses, I'm not sure how I will be able to afford my car/board. (Unless I get a weekend job, but I like to keep my weekends free)

The second problem I see is, what if I don't like any of the courses? I could spend years doing 3-4 courses, not getting anywhere, and been in my early 20ies still with no clue of what I want to do.

I’m sure there will be the perfect job for me out there somewhere, I just don't know how to go about finding it.

Has anyone else been in, or currently in my situation?

I just want you to know that, your not alone. I've been fighting for a couple of years to get through my days. Now, my education has been paused since there were no purpose for me to keep contenuing. So I can take my time and relax. Meanwhile, I'am working with Internet Affiliate Marketing. If your curious, you can follow up on that within my profile.
I wish you good luck, and dont worry, everything is going to be just fine. It's just a bad period in life. What does not kill us makes us stronger, right? :)

  • Well, two years on after first posting this story, and I've finally handed in my notice.

Be prepared - nothing you switch to will pay nearly as much as IT!

  • Aptitude tests might help you hone in on your interest. Its hard to imagine many jobs that require little formal training/qualifications & are interesting and offer career paths. There are some -usually for people with a particular interest, but not many.

So I think looking at school is a good idea. Give up the car if need be. Or keep the job and do school part time. Lots of options these days. Do your research. Whatever goal you set, realise that 5 years are going to go by whether you do anything or not. Never a waste to do something.

I'm a few years older than you and if I had to do it all again I would look at the working conditions of the job/career, instead of if I like the coursework.

An example is a friend got an expensive certificate in a cooking school and was quite good at it, but overlooked having to work on his feet for 12-14 hours/day. He is now back in school at 40 YO.

Many technical jobs have hard deadlines you must meet, for another example. Pressure x 100! At 19, I was completely confloosed, too. Do careful research, you can F*CK up big!!

Find something that you enjoy doing, then see what it will take to do it professionally. You may have to give-up your weekends to afford your choice, but sometimes sacrifices must be made. This is something you must decide.

I'm also 19, and I haven't made any career oriented choices.

I'm also about to become homeless.
