I'm sick of hearing about the middle east

(Sorry in advance that this is so long and rant-y)

Every time I watch world news, the conflicts in the Middle East are the subject. I hate having to hear about it because I really don't give a shit about their ass-backwards society that's stuck in the middle ages. If they can't figure out how to be a civil, rational society, I can't really bring myself to care how shitty it makes their citizens' lives. I also don't think it's our job (more advanced nations) (I'm from Canada) to try and fix any of it. We can't help them anyways because the root of the problem is in their religious extremism and inability to separate their politics from that situation. I'm not going to get into that though.

Civilizations learn and advance very slowly, including our own "first world" civilizations, which have a lot of learning to do yet themselves.

My point is: Is it normal to not care about the Middle East, and to think it's their own problem if they can't interpret their religion in a way that allows them to live in peace??

I'm tired of having to hear about it and being told that I need to sympathize. I'd rather read about interesting things happening around the world that demonstrate humanity's advancements in science, or in technology, or in getting along. Not about how painfully far back some parts of the world are stuck.

TRUE THAT! I couldn't agree more. I think some nations biggest problems are separating policy making from nonfactual bias. I mean just take a look at the whole gay marriage situation. Everybody is entitled to their own beliefs. Nothing wrong there. But when their beliefs about how other people should live their life encroach there's a problem and even more complications. Because it's not based on facts. Just opinions about something that is not proven. I'm not saying don't practice religion. I'm just saying don't let it affect policy to a point where people are made to feel unequal.

I sympathize with your rant and if I weren't lazy, I probably wouldv'e wrote it myself. It's not your problem that other people choose to remain ignorant and not advance as individuals. In my opinion I think everybody should celebrate being their own individual rather than sulk on civilization's hindering flaws. That's just my opinion. You feel and think what you want to think.

And yet again someone jumps on the rasism bandwagon.

When I say things like KILL ALL *insert random nation here* - that's rasism.
When I point out the obvious differences between Europe, USA and middle east such as that the countries of the latter cannot separate religion from politics, are breeding nests of religious and racial intolerance, have no democracy and contribute almost 0 to the world's cultural and scientific heritage, all I'm doing is pointing out the obvious. Why should I care if today some Wahhabi shahids in Pakistan blew up a Zikri mosque? The problem is that their society tolerates all those atrocities and until it learns at least something about it's own religion, which is actually a peaceful one I couldn't care less what they do to each other. Absolutely normal.

I concure we should just nuke the lot of them or leave them too kill them selves so we can all get on in life. We risk our own people to keep peace so whats the point. There is more happening in the world then politics.

Forgetting the Middle East and thinking about all the world in general for a moment; In the past before all this 'news' most people didn't really know much about what went on around the world. I am not saying it would be good to go back to that, but I sometimes think we see too much now and it actually has the effect of everyone thinking they know a little bit about everything but really knowing a whole lot about nothing. There are good and bad people everywhere getting involved in things they don't really understand and it can be rather dangerous.

sorry but that's not normal. i am from california, and i find it shameful that we should think we should be headline news for other nations, but that other people's news should not be spotlight. that's just racism and double standards.
when one part of the world hurts, the rest should take notice and help out.
    good day

I'm right there with you. And no, it's not because I'm jumping on the "racism bandwagon." As far as I can tell most people think 'to hell with the middle east.'

However, in response to the OP's question, based on how most people that I know feel about the middle east: yes, it definitely seems to be the norm - that is, to not care about the problems in the middle east. But I don't feel that this outlook should be considered normal, as it is dismissive and degrading. It's an attitude that many ignorant people will maintain and defend.

I am not against Islam because, just like any other religion, there are extremists. Granted, there tends to be a lot more detriment involved in islamic extremism, especially to the western world and US in particular. But I do agree in the fact that I'm fucking tired of getting on yahoo, msn, or watching any news station and hearing about endless, and helpless problems of not just the countries you mentioned; but riots in Libya, Egypt, Lebanon, Syria etc. I am losing any form of patience with educating myself on problems in the Middle East and a lot of the countries in that area of Northeastern Africa, Western Asia etc. I understand their economies suck and that there are immense social disadvantages but there is nothing that we, as Americans, can do about it. We have tried defectively to do so for years and at this point it is becoming clear there is absolutely no way we can solve their reconstruction problems.

Not against the war in the Middle East only because I know that without our national security at least keeping a sense of authority there that we would probably be attacked again. But I do think there should be much less focus and efforts made to achieve solutions that are nearly impossible for helpless and reluctant governments there.

But what you have to underatand is if no one cares about them and their muslum extremeism, then who will stop them from more 9/11 style/terrorist attacks on the westwen world/europe? So as you can see, we have a great deal at stake here.
