I'm scared of als

My mom was diagnosed with ALS two years ago. It's a disease that kills the motor neurons that sends the message from the brain to the muscles to move. I'm afraid that when I'm my mom's age, or even earlier, I'll be stricken with this disease, even though the doctors said it wasn't familial. I really want to be tested to see if I have any precursors in my DNA for it. Is it normal to be so scared?

    YES IT IS NORMAL!!!! My mom has alot of medical problems so does my dad and im scared it may have been pass down 2 me.Im being tested.Just remember this it will all work out one way or the other all that matters is the end results and if u do get it just get it taken care of ain't no disease gonna mess up ur life its UR LIFE SO THE DISEASE HAS 2 RESPECT THAT!!!

    Yes! Totally normal! My son has DMD. When we found out about it, I was tested to see if I am a carrier, this is generally passed mother to son, and I am. Now I have to be sure and have my daughter tested as well. She cannot genetically have it, bit there is a 1:4 shot that she is a carrier and can pass it to her children. The test decision is up to you but keep in the back of your mind that this could effect your kids (now or future) in many ways. I offered my daughter the choice to be tested and she wants to do it.
    I wish you all the luck in the world, this is sort of decision shouldn't be put on anyone! Also, MDA (Jerrys kids)has helped us through alot. Counseling, etc.

    ALS is also a terminal illness, theres no cure or anything. People only live about three years with it, crippled that is.

    It is totally normal to be scared. Just don't let it rule your life. If it isn't one thing, it will be another.

    of course your scared, how sad for all of you to have this black cloud hanging over your head, maybe it might be a good idea to get tested, so if its negative you can relax, hope its good news or they find a cure
