Why? You are not being specific enough.
Are you sad, because crooked Hilary didn't get elected?
Most leaders only gives big speeches and hardly keep their promises, once they get elected. Also so many tend to stay in power through rigged elections... However other systems like communism and dictatorship are so oppressive, in Mao Zedogn's regime, during the great leap forward (1958-1962), around 45 million died in famine, and there was no opposition to oppose him, nor a free press to criticize him tho change his policies, something like that never happens with democratic system where there are oppositions and a freedom of the media). But system wise Democracy is the perfect system, but people in power are not are not and its the corrupt leaders who are to blame!
I agree that democracy is in decline. Autocratic governments are learning which buttons to push to polarize voters in North America and Western Europe. Enlightened compromise by moderate representatives is not expected anymore. Vladimir Putin has mastered the process.
If you're talking about America, it is not a democracy. America is a republic. Even countries that are democracies, do not give much more power to their voters, if anymore at all.
