I'm extremely bothered by the food segments on tv shows.iin?

I absolutely HATE the news segments and other shows showing cooking and recipes. It's so wasteful!! They have so much food, all in different states of doneness, raw meat, then cups of spices and other ingredients, and so on. They rush through it to show you how to make the crap, and all the previous steps of undone food is just wasted. It's horrifying. The waste is awful. It seems so unnecessary to me, it IS possible to show how to make something while being conservative and responsible. I understand some give out the finished food, but all the previous 'steps' of uncooked food is thrown out and/or just ruined and deemed inedible (bacteria, etc) for the sake of the stupid segment.

This is awful and needs to change.

is it normal to be bothered by this?

I thought this was going to be about how they basically nut on themselves talking about how amazing the food tastes or smells. "Mmmm..ohhhh..UUUGHH!!! You guys HAVE to try this..". Well bitch, we can't because we're not where you are.

    That shit pisses me off.

According to the UN, the world wastes 1.3 billion tons of food. Each year. I highly doubt filler news stories and talk shows constitute a large percentage of that number. If food waste bothers you (as it should), take the fight to where it actually matters. Food processing facilities and food retailers (supermarkets, restaurants) are among the biggest wasters.

It's great that you've noticed this injustice, now you can decide to do something about it or you can just get on IIN and bitch to strangers about how much it sucks.

    • I don't buy from those sorts of places, so in my own little way I am doing my part. I grow most of my own food. I almost NEVER eat at restaurants either. I try to help other people do at least some of the little things I do, some do, some don't but I've made a real big impression on my family regarding this. I AM doing something. Stuff that rotten know-it-all attitude up your ass, pal, and don't make assumptions about me, you don't know shit about me or what I do. Well, except what I just told you, that you now know. Other than that, don't assume anything.

Did it ever occur to you that maybe by asking about it here, some people might have ideas, suggestions or share what they do, and that may help both me and other readers to stop the waste of so much food? To maybe get some tips or make some small changes themselves? Guess not. Too busy trying to look smart and be a douche. You failed, FYI.

People will share what they do about waste on food shows? Nice revision, but that's clearly not what your story is about. You could have easily made a story asking people how they curb their own waste or asking for people to share tips, but instead you decided to write about this. So far no one seems willing to share tips because so far you've only been a dick. "Did I say I hated learning recipes? NO." My personal favorite - "You are RETARDED", to someone who didn't know how these shows work and was asking about it. Seems I'm not the only pretentious douche here! Nice to meet you!

Still stand by everything I said. Take the fight to reducing waste in manufacture and retail.

        • I'm the OP, I am the only one who is allowed to be a dick here, like it or not.

Stand by what you said all you want, I told you what I do, instead of writing letters and trying to shut down billion-dollar industries in one swoop, I take the steps I can and try my best to share those ideas. I think that's better than futile attempts and at least it's actual action and I'm not supporting these places with MY money. Problem? What the fuck is wrong with you? Are you saying I should stop what I'm doing and spend my free time writing letters or plotting terrorist attacks on Wal Marts? What the hell ARE you saying??

The quantity supermarkets waste and cause suppliers to waste through overestimating orders is ridiculous :/ It makes me a little sad.

I love the idea of wasting food. Sometimes I grill a lot of steaks and then just go up to the roof of my building and see how far I can throw them.

It seems to me that someone doesnt like cooking shows wasting food. When I realized I didnt like to tie my shoes I started wearing flip-flops,now that I dont like the price of gas I ride a scooter. When I was tired of wearing a rubber I got married. When I didnt like being fat I went on a diet,so all I'm saying is maybe you should change the fucking channel.

The food isn't wasted. If there is an audience, they get to eat it. If not, the crew eats it.

I live very close to the major two television studios in this country, so I often go along to see live television being filmed. What you see is very definitely not what always happens.

If you ask them really nicely they might let you have the leftover food. Just find out when and where the segments are filmed.

i like cooking shows because they give me ideas. most of the food i eat, i cook myself, so having a varied knowledge of food is important to me. generally people who hate cooking shows are the ones who eat mostly junk and take out food. shame really.

what waste? none of the cooking shows i have seen have wasted food. they show how to cook it and then they eat it after and share it with the crew. doesnt sound like the shows you are watching are proper cooking shows. do you worry about the waste of food in fast food restaurants?

        • I worry about ALL food waste. The cooking segments (mostly on the morning news programs) irk me a lot though because the waste is so enormous and pointless.

oh, well if you were worried about all food waste, then why didnt you put that in your story instead of just complaining about cooking shows? maybe you should write letters to the networks who air those shows and tell them of your concerns and see if they can do something to stop food waste.

It's a fair point, though. How do you know it's not shared with the crew or audience?

I love food television. There's a special thrill in watching my food itself cook food and fatten itself up for the day when, surely, I will strike.

Have you ever seen the genius Brazilian documentary short called The Island of Flowers? All this discussion reminded me of it and I would like to share. I'm trying to find a subtitled version. I'll post a link, if you or anyone else cares to watch.
