I'm eating everyday at subway. is it healthy?
I'm in India for a contractual project on behalf of my company and would need to stay here for at least 8 to 10 months. That's a pretty long time to spend in such a far-off land for someone who's never ventured outside North America. I never really knew much about this country before coming down to live here, considering my past ignorance I might as well have been living in Jupiter or Uranus. In fact, India never really figured in my list of must-see travel destinations.
Anyway, so far, I'm loving this place, it's really exciting and every day something unusual happens, I'm gonna love it because there's so much to see and do but I have realized that one needs to grow a thick skin in order to survive India - it's impossible to ignore the filth and poverty around you. And I really mean it, the moment I stepped off the plane, I was exposed to all that stuff you see in documentaries about India: cows on the streets, cab drivers honking like maniacs (it's a noisy country - think of a Chris Brown concert - and multiply the decibel levels by 10 and you'll have an idea of the noise levels I'm exposed to here - everyone shouts on their cellphones). Everywhere you look around, there's piles of garbage. To call all this a cultural shock would be an understatement, in fact the moment I got off the plane I was like "welcome to the third world, motherfucker!"
However, people over here more than compensate for the third world surroundings. I mean, contrary to news reports, the streets are safe to walk around and there's hardly any crime. Also the people are really nice and super-friendly, I had to turn down some invitations by Indian families to visit their homes for lunch and dinner. Back home I was never really the social type but over here, I love to mingle around all the time. I knew a few Indians back home but I always thought they were an insular community that like to keep to themselves. Not over here. I've been approached by plenty of beautiful Indian girls. Haven't fucked one yet but looks like, wouldn't be long before I get my dick wrapped around one of these hot Indian pussies. I've been told they're all nymphomaniacs and just aching for sex. Could be true, how else did they get so overpopulated over here - 1.3 billion people - they must be fucking a lot!
Oh, sorry about this long story. I'm actually a bit drunk today. It's an early weekend over here because they have some crazy Hindoo festival going on called Dussera something.
Coming back to topic, one thing I can't really adjust to in India is the Food. I mean you really need to have a very strong stomach to tolerate thosse hot curries they eat over here. I did try their national dish once or twice which led to more than a few run-ins around the pit toilet these Indians have. Sorry if it sounds insensitive but Indian food is really slop and garbage, it's the most revolting thing in the world. All the more reason for me to turn down dinner invitation of well-meaning Indian families.
Luckily, US corporations saw this problem before I came here. So we have all these McDonald's and Subway outlets in every city of India. For the past one week, I've been eating nothing but Subway sandwiches. Somehow I feel a LOT BETTER than those vindaloo experiments.
I've always been a Subway fan and even back in the US, I used to enjoy their sandwiches at least twice a week. A lot of food items that you find on the menu the US are also available here: Tuna, Turkey, Italian BMT, Oven Roasted Chicken, Veggie Delite. In fact, I found that the Subway outlets over here are VERY CLEAN compared to back home. The meat doesn't lie around for weeks since they test for temperature all the time and manage the inventory pretty well so the meat simply happens to be more delicious. The servers use plastic gloves while handling your food, the veggies are farm-produced and as fresh as they can be. Breakfast's healthy too, there's ham, egg and cheese and they prepare it right in front of you.
I try to make healthy choices in my meals - I do not use any sauces except for vinaigrette. I just take enough meat to fulfill my daily protein intake and stick to multigrain bread which I believe is the healthiest option they have at Subway.
I don't know, it kinda gets boring eating at Subway day in and day out. But I'm really gonna have to starve if I don't eat here.
Of all the things in God's blue heaven, why did Indians have to invent curry? Otherwise they're a great people. And what's with the HEAD-NODDING all the time.
I don't know Subway for eight months straight sounds a bit crazy to me but there's really nothing much for me to eat here.
Of course, I supplement my Subway meals with plenty of fruits and nuts on a daily basis. Bananas are quite cheap over here, so is peanuts. I take yogurt occasionally and take a lot of coffee from the vending machines which means my dairy intake is more than what it used to be.
