I'm black, and black men intimidate me.

I'm a black guy, and I grew up in "the ghetto," but I went to schools in the predominantly white upper middle class area, and I have picked up those "white" mannerisms. As I walked through the streets of where I used to live, I get picked on for "acting white", and I pass by many black men, and shivers go down my spine. I still feel that way today, every time I walk pass them, I turn away or look down to the pavement. Is this normal??

The sad thing is that those white mannerisms also show you are probably an articulate intelligent young man and more than likely will land you a good job while the guys in the hood will continue to spew this victim mentality and use this as a rallying point to continue this stagnation of the black race

I agree with you and with redDog. I guess is the acctitude what really intimidate you, doesent't matter what colour people are. I feel intimitated by people who want to look like agressive and dominant...trying to learnt how to deal with them...
    good luck

  • These sound like class issues. Poor whites, or whatever, will pick on one of their own for moving on (and up).

i agree that you should leave the hood. i wasn't brought up in the hood, i have been brought up around hood ppl tho, and i spent 2 years on my own at my hood in jersey. i think the problem is you. If you grew up in that hood then walking past a brother wouldnt intimidate you.. of course you get a little paranoid when passing a group of thugs outside the corner store but you just make brief eye contact with them and then keep it movin.. if they know your face from around... your basically good if you stay away from beef.
To Bubear i blame slavery for our negative flow of our black race. We were trained to hate ourselves, not personally but as a human, its been handed down and all of us carry the trait without even acknowledging it.
