I'm an art student with no tolerance for modern art

I hate modern art almost 100 percent of the time. It really makes me rather angry that people make a living calling themselves artists when they are performers, con artists and story tellers. I am a fine arts graduate so I sometimes feel like I should be fascinated like alot of the others, but honestly it seems like pure laziness and it really kinda irks me.

Yeah, I know it's trendy to see "art" in a splash of black paint on a canvas but I'm sorry, that shit is ridiculous. When I see something like that at galleries on sale for hundreds, thousands of dollars, I can't help but think that SOMEONE will buy that and then I just get annoyed with how idiotic people can be.

There are a lot of types of art. That's the beauty of it. If you don't like a particular type, then there are lots more to choose from. I respect other types of art and find them fascinating. If modern art is not for you than what can you do?

I don't believe it ls laziness... Whenever I see modern art I always look to see what the piece means. That splatter of paint could be the emotions of the artist that day and they had to get it on canvas. No piece of art is the same and every piece has a story to tell.

Thanks for answering for others. I felt pretty guilty about it and that's why I asked. I know people have their preferences and that's just mine I guess.I'm not off to learning about anything new but if I have an opinion that's how it is. Anyways, I like some surrealists BTW, it's more contemporary art I don't like. Also Dada I don't get. But for the most part, to each his own.

for a fine arts graduate you seem to know very little about art. maybe you should go back to school and pay attention this time.

Thanks for the snarky comment. I was in school at the time and yeah I decided I didn't like it and switched out so congratz on that. I am more open minded now but I still feel like I don't like the more modern artists. I don't know what to say to someone like you. I don't like it and sorry it offended you somehow. Maybe you should ask if that's normal?

I'm a graphic designer and I find a lot of art pretentious and overrated. But then my job is mostly functional, conveying messages and needs.
Modern art bothers me just as much. You're normal.

I agree. Some modern art looks very attractive, like pop art, but it really can't be considered true art. I mean, that's only my opinion, because art's in the eye of the beholder. =P

Most of modern art is shit. With this i am referring to what is these days hung on gallery walls.A white canvas with a black dot and this guy tries to sell himself as an artist explaining to me that it is in fact the struggle man faces when blah blah blah...No it's not.it's a white canvas with a dot representing the fact that you can't paint even if your life depended on it and you hide behind these excuses and explanations because you are worthless yet want to be an artist because it's cool.i know a lot of people like this, they would like to become an artist overnight and their art is a result of this. That's why it's horrible, they lack any skills whatsoever and don't care much for acquiring any either. They use Pollock,Kandinsky etc. as an excuse thinking that they are somehow continuing their legacy. It would't even annoy me as much if it weren't for the fact that it's their fault people distance themselves from art thinking they don't or won't understand it anyway.

I can understand why you don't like it, but I don't understand that you can't appreciate it. I know that modern art looks tacky and lazy, but you have to think about it where it comes from, its roots in history, and how art movements are always reactionary.
I think a lot of your distaste comes from the fact that Modern Art is something from our parent's generation, and is therefore tacky and bad. I have memories of going to my friends houses as a kid and being sooo turned off by the decor, which was so obviously Modern.
I think it all boils down to a changing in values and interests.
What's your opinion on post-modernism, and contemporary art?

Define modern art. I'm a high school art student and am fine with Jackson Pollock, though strictly not a fan. Certain modern art do have their values and meanings, and I prefer the ones that have plenty of depth, but not completely abstract, or degrading (ex. L.H.O.O.Q). You know what I'm talking about :)

For me, art must not be entirely conceptual. Some of my favourite artists are Jacques Louis David, Frida Kahlo and Rene Magritte.

yes, actually i kind of agree with you. Fine arts is based looking realistic, and conveying beauty more than it is conveying a meaning or opinion. But i think people have latched onto these stories and forgotten you must first have talent and a good work ethic before you can experiment and try to tell your story. I've never been good at selling myself so basing your work on your sales pitch seems completely foreign to me. Granted I myself am no "professional" artist. There is some good modern art as long as I don't feel like the artist is taking me for a ride in which he himself would never get on. You have to have some passion behind your message too, if you're joking around don't waste our time. Sure you could say your making a point, pointing out people are stupid...but you might as well sit yourself right down with them if your going to make your life's work into making a joke. Also, some people do shoddy work and call it art because they know they can just put some fine art label on it and ship it off to the next person with too much money. It's a good gig, granted but your life will be what you do with it no matter how many people say its avant-garde its still not going to be your best work and you will know it alone.

Nah.fine art is a generic term meaning all art, modern art included. Modern art is called this because it was created at a certain time in history.Around the time of the industrial revolution..If you all are talking about art that is happening now..hey that's totally subjective..each person will like what they will, depending on their own personal tastes.Sometimes we can't bend our tastes to conform with whats hot or not in fashion in the art world. So for me , I reckon , to go for what you like is normal!

i guess the funniness in Warhol's art was that he was making fun of the modern art community... at how pretentious it had become and the fact that rich snooty people would basically buy anything if it were in a gallery and they would eat up the words of some amazing mysterious famous artists. his interview clips are completely hilarious! he never really answers questions or a whole interview he will just answer yes. there is one interview where you can see him trying not to laugh! or maybe he was high ?...

Ok, modern art is completely different to Fine Arts. Most fine arts you can just look at and see it is good (I find it pretty mundane, 'cause there's so much of it, but that's my opinion, don't shoot me for it). However, modern art has (or can, or should) have a deep concept or (current) humour or state of affairs behind it.
Ok, some fine arts have this (one that comes to mind is Guernica by Picasso, which has hidden elements relating to the Spainish Civil War...I think could be wrong).
However modern art is pretty much entirely conceptual (or the modern art you think is crap, like other people). But it's some 'artists' who think they are 'modern' and do crap work, and expect it to get good views on it. I agree, fine arts takes so much more skill than that of some modern art (especially Damian Hurst, who doesn't even make some of his works!).
There are people who call themselves artists who don't deserve this 'title', but there are people who are performers, which is still art (eg dance and music...performing arts?).

Art is what one believes in. People can love it or hate it, but it still creates discussion and thought.

lol, I visited a modern art gallery in march last year. It was quite funny. There were these pictures in frames, of cut out hoops. They looked like they were done by a 5 year old.

I can appreciate some of them, playing optical illusion or drawing unlikely objects together to show a deeper message.

But just like you, I think Picaso's paintings are just pure B.S. doodling while he was high or something...

and Andy Warhol's Marylin Monroe and Campbell Soup Can....give me a broken camera and my 5 years old cousin can do a better job than him...

    and so on so on....
