I'm a writer but feel it's useless

I'm not very good at much else, but I've had good feedback as to my stories and poetry. However, I often feel like I'm not good enough. For instance, I love science but I don't think I can pursue a career in it.
Writing is amazing and a great passion of mine; it has been ever since I can remember. However, I just want to be good at something I feel is more important and helpful to people.

Yeah. I know how you feel. Maybe we all feel like this and most of us just don't talk about it. My best advice to you is to just keep doing what you really love doing, and who knows, maybe it will take off for you.

Try volunteering at an animal or homeless shelter if you want to feel important and helpful to people. It will also offer you many opportunities to experience things you can use in your writing.
Writing is best done about things you know well, so it takes time and experiences to build the framework from which to write. This is why there are rarely successful young writers.

I was great at writing but I didn't think it was a feasible career and went into a science field instead. However I do write a lot and have gotten recognition. The worst thing you can do for your talent is to give up on it. Keep nurturing it and be confident in what you want to do because insecurity will cause you to fail.

Writing and science, fields you're interested in are ones which not only revolutionize our world and thinking but helps people as well on doing so. You just need to work harder and have faith. However I can relate to this despondency at your potential.

    • I'm not very confident but I would never give up on it. It has and always will be a hobby of mine, at least.

You can always write for a hobby. Many people with degrees in science work in fields that are only loosely associated with their studies.
