I lost a toe nail

The other day, I was sitting watching some anime and out of nowhere I was picking at my toenails. Then I noticed the nail was lifting completely, so I decided to rip the whole nail out. It was quite painful, but I couldnt leave it attached as it would get cought on my socks and such. I have bandaged it and put ointment on the area, should I go to the doctor? Should I leave it be?

I just feel like sharing. When I was young in ballet, and dancing en pointe I lost a toenail off of one of my big toes, but I can't remember which it was now. It was kinda gnarly, but not that bad, because I preferred dancing en pointe to having perfect toenails. Anyway, that doesn't have anything to do with anything other than my stream of consciousness.

Thanks for your patience. I hope your toenail gets better.

Maybe it's due to a bad blood pressure !
Or maybe a lack of something important in your body !

(I'm not a doctor for saying this.)

Was it very loose already before you started picking it? This can happen with fungal Nail infections, and also if you have some sort of trauma. The trauma doesn't have to be something big, like dropping a heavy object - it can be repeated small things, such as running/jogging or wearing shoes that are too tight.

The thought of nail fungus makes me shiver. Trauma to the nail on the other hand, just brings back fond memories of ballet class, and dancing en pointe.

I have 2 toe nails peeling off right now, leave it. If it continues to be a problem go to a pediatrist. Nail growing back is not gauranteed

Leave it be. A doctor isn't going to offer you a prosthetic toenail and donor toenails aren't harvested from corpses, so you won't get a transplant. If you keep it protected until it scabs over and then try to avoid messing around with it, it should eventually regrow.

Oh, and get out of the habit of picking at yourself.

    • I have been diagnosed with trichotillomania (hair pulling) so it is an ongoing struggle, but I have never reached this low before.

You might have bad feet. It might be toenail fungus or overly tight fitted shoes. Doctor might diagnose the problem but maybe look up nail videos on proper foot care and poasible foot problems see if any fit.
