I live in the south. is it wrong for me to hate barbeque and ham?

Hi I grew up in the south and I hate barbeque and ham. I gag every time I have a piece of fat stuck in my piece of pork. I also cannot stand the taste of ham because it's so chewy it makes me gag. After awhile barbeque gets way too boring for me and I get interested in something else. After awhile of pork and vinegar I just get tired of it. Is this normal?

I'm a southerner, and I have not participating in a mass lynching mob.

Not being a stereotype is normal.

course it's normal, i'm the same way. i'm from pennsylvania and up here it's all about cow tongues, scrapple, and sauerkraut. and i don't like any of those things.
plus the philly cheesesteak is overrated. i'd have a rack of baby back ribs over a cheesesteak any day.

Aw thanks! That makes me feel way better. I can shee how food terms can be so overated like Philly cheesesteak, food on a stick for minnesota, and best hot dog vendors in NY. Mmmm the cheesesteak sounds awesome.

Normal, you like what you like. I'm from Ohio and people here are all about meat & potatoes. I'm a vegetarian & I can only eat potatoes with some kind of topping..hah.

I don't like southern food in general. I'm not from the south, but allot of my relatives are. I once had an argument with over the fact that I didn't like southern food, because it was unhealthy.

I think this very normal. The place I'm from is famous for crabs. I ate them on and off as a kid, but now I don't understand the appeal:)

    Shut yo mouf!

    Just kidding!
Seriously though, if people bug you about not wanting bbq or ham... just point out that it means more for them!

put it in terms that they can enjoy and they may bug you less.

That sounds pretty reasonable. Thanks hon. My grandma was raised in Alabama and can cook other things such as GIANT cinnamon rolls, collard 'greens', chocolate chip pecan pie(OMG), and etc. My mom growing up in Ohio was always with her Alabama recipes and had to keep herself from getting in the oven. My dad was from Ohio and of course ate regular Northern food. I have always had a strong northern influence since both of my parents were born in Ohio but my mom has a bit of twang since her mom was southern. Her mom used to not even fry chicken because she was worried that she might burn the house down. LOL. Her relatives would of course make it but not as much as in the southeast here. My mom never developed a taste for it and I guess she passed it down to me. I don't like it. But I'm always polite when I'm in the restaurant around other southerners. I will eat chicken stew, chowder, dumplings, and etc. JUST NOT fried chicken. Call me crazy(most do) but I guess I'm not for it.

        Collard greens... Bleh.

So I'll eat the pork for you and you can eat those nasty greens for me.

And yeah, i'm from the North East myself. although I don't really think of what I ate as "north food" cos it just seems regular to me. We had pork and bbq... just perhaps not as much of it as what i see down here.

Mom used to tell me these long tales about all of her relatives getting together and always talking(never listening to each other finish each others sentences) and just talk and talk. At the very end everyone would rush into the kitchen for giant buttermilk bisquits and etc. Mom said they were the nicest southerners you'd ever meet and never questioned why she didn't eat fried chicken. They were always asking why mom didn't eat more pie. Lol. I wish I could have met my Aunt. Ray. Mom said she was a amazing cook and made these giant cinnamon rolls dripping with butter. She was always careful about her weight because she was a weight watcher but boy were they good the way she described them. My mom still calls my Aunt Ima and they talk forever about different things. When you go lookin for a bite to eat it was always in the 'fridgedair."

Because the definition of being a southerner automatically implies that you must like barbeque and ham...
