I like to read before bed but the light from screens is a disruption

Will I have to stop this activity? Ugh! This is the problem with all of these screens. LIGHT! Bright light. I try to adjust it. I dim the screen. I change the light colors. No help. The light is too disruptive. I know the difference. I get happy sleepy when I'm driving home at night. But, once my eyeballs get hit by bright light? My sleep inducing chemicals shut off. Then, nothing triggers sleep except waiting. I might crash at 4am, even if I have to be up by 7am. Sucks! Is this normal?

No apps or inventions that let me keep using a lighted screen without frying my eyes with intense light?

Whatever happened to the fine art of reading paper books? You know, real books? I weep for humanity's future.

I think OP was referring to electronic reading in specific because it was before bed. But I guess he/she could've just turned on a lamp with an actual book at hand.
