I like documentaries better than most movies

i far prefer documentaries or lectures on interesting subjects to most movies (and especially to the "based on actual events" movies). i usually find some sort of medical lecture or random nature documentary online to fall asleep to. i just think most movies are horribly boring crap, and i actually like learning about things. i figured i'd outgrow it, but i'm 31. i realize i must be a total nerd, but are there any others out there?

Dude, you're totally fine. I sat and watched an entire UC Berkley lecture (around 2hrs) on earthquakes. EARTHQUAKES! I live in California, we have them all the time, but for some reason it was the most fascinating thing I have come across in a long time. I would rather watch Chernobyl Heart (if you haven't seen it..DO!) than some crappy rom-com or dramedy anyday. This isn't to say that I don't enjoy a good 100%% fictional flick, but I love documentaries with a passion. Next on my list is foreign films.

Quite normal, i am obsessed with Nat. geo, discovery channel and the history channel. I love learning about things that happened a long time ago or things that affect the world. I find them more entertaining than movies. Especially the crap in cinemas now.

I'm like you. I prefer to watch PBS or Discovery over most television or fictional movies. You simply don't find escape in fantasy, you enjoy exploring the real world. Nothing wrong with that.

Most of the time for me personally, watching documentaries inspires my own fiction, which is much more entertaining than half the schlock Hollywood tosses our way anyhoo.

Yeah you're fairly normal, intelligent person. Fact is often far more interesting than fiction.

yes most of the stuff we are exposed to through mass media applications are crap. we are living during a cultural crisis of materialism, celebrity worship, closed mindedness, and anti-intellectualism. we live in a highly decadent era. you should be proud that you're not totally immersed in superficial nonsense.

egree rather than having your brain sucked out by the other crap that's out there.

As to the "based on real events" movies, I tend to agree to a certain extent -- especially the Oliver Stone class of crap.

But there are some movies that are intended to be biographical, and track pretty well with the actual events. Some that come to mind include Gandhi, Zulu, Lawrence of Arabia, Apollo 13 and that sort of film. I do enjoy those.

My opinion, per se is that the content of modern movies has not just declined in quality but also in quantity. I think that movie makers have simply run out of ideas. Sort of like a chess game does in it's final stages. Im a Documetary, the entire world becomes the stage. (Since it's real). Material stems from the source and this 'Source' may become more difficult to reach as time progresses. Therein lie my doubts about modern documentary proliferation. It's likely that people will just become dull and burnt out by generations of action/combat flicks. - Yeah - Information RULES - and if you want a movie with a good story, make sure it is black nd white.

I don't know if I'm totally like you, but I definitely understand where you're coming from. I can still enjoy some films, but most of them are pretty shit. I prefer finding out about things that have a bearing irl, so I think you're normal : )
