I lied to a girl about my relationship so i could avoid going out with

her. I just need some advice so the poll choices don't really matter.

Ok, so the full story is that a girl asked me out to a school dance. She's one of my good friends and she asked me out in public so I said "Yes." I don't want to go out with her because I've had my eye on another girl that's into me as well. A few minutes later, one of our mutual friends asks me, "Wait, don't you have a girlfriend?" Of course, I lied and said "Yes, she goes to some other school." I don't have a girlfriend in another school. The girl that asked me out looked sad and I know I broke her heart.

What can I do to salvage our friendship and keep the girl that I like interested in me?

You could of been honest in the first place and politely declined.

BUT it sounds like you didn't want to embarrass her in public if you declined her request in front of everyone. I would immediately explain to her why you said yes.

    • Yeah, I really didn't want to say no and look like an asshole. She even said she needed a date for the dance because she's graduating this year so I thought this was going to be platonic, but then I realized this was way past that.

Should I just tell her I lied about the girlfriend and risk hurting her even more?

      • I wouldn't tell her you lied about the fake girlfriend. That is a lie that should never be revealed. To make it go away make it seem that the relationship with the fake girlfriend was not serious and short lived, for example you dated her for a week or two and then broke up. That way you get rid of the lie that will otherwise be discovered.

        • Yeah, but I said I was with my fake girlfriend for a year. Thanks for the help, but I just told her the truth about everything.

I think it was tacky of her to put you on the spot by asking you out in front of other people.

Yo damn right, she shouldn't have put him on the spot!

As far as I'm concerned there's nothing wrong with with what OP did. I did that all the time when I was young and I'd do it again. ;-)
