I laugh without realizing it

is it normal to laugh in a serious situation, without trying to, just out of reaction.

for instance, i tend to laugh under my breath when people are being completely serious with me about emotions or feelings, and in the end I get called an a**hole, even though I was really listening and interested with what they have to say.

Oh my god yes this describes me so much.
I guess it's normal for certain people that just have a sense of humor.

I understand your situation as it happens to me too, it isn't the situation that makes you laugh, but the spot they have put you in (the listener or the problem solver maybe). My guess is that you are shy and laughter is a defense mechanism, try to take it easy (it isn't easy) and if they get mad then it's their loss because you seem like a good listener.

i disagree with the above statement. i do this too! i know your not being selfish, that it just sorta happens, without you sending the signals for it to happen... i tend to laugh when im getting in trouble... caused me ALOT of problems in school and growing up.. i guess when teachers or parents are giving you a 'talk' they dont like it when your trying to muffle a laugh the whole time.... lol but no, i dont think we are normal

Sometimes people laugh as to not let themselves get hurt, but if someone is opening up to you and telling you something sincere it is totally rude AND IMMATURE to laugh. This is a form of immaturity on your part. You're thinking selfishly and not amount whatever the issue at hand is.
