I kinda want to try drugs to get inspiration.

I've never done drugs before in real life, and I don't want to because I've seen how it can ruin a person's life first-hand.
( My half brother got into drugs in his teenaged years, and now that he's 25, he's still hooked on it, and goes in and out of jail all the time. Not to mention he's turned selfish and violent because of drugs.)

Anyway, I write stories, but sometimes I lack inspiration for them, or sometimes I just lack the encouragement to write.
However, I've caught myself wondering if I smoked weed, would it give me inspiration?

I say weed because I wouldn't trust any other drug like crack or acid. Weed, on the other hand is a bit more neutral,
it's just more safe to me. Besides that, it's been used for medical purposes, so it must not be that bad.

Anyway, of course I could never actually get weed,
it's illegal where I live, and I wouldn't want to go to jail.
I'm not a bad person, I swear, I just want to be more creative.

Is this a normal desire?

No. Drugs are bad. 24
Yes. it's normal. 55
I wouldn't know, I've never tried drugs. 10
There are other ways to get inspiration. (Then please suggest some.) 20

That's normal. But to be honest, I think the whole "drugs as inspiration" thing is a little bit overrated.

Even though the cliche now is more like "..yeh, you'll create stuff on drugs but afterwards you'll realise it's just rubbish". I still think drugs can provide inspiration by giving you a completely fresh perspective on things and giving you thoughts you never would normally have had.

Or making you feel amazing enough to 'crank' out pages (and pages) and run with ideas, some of which will genuinely be good.

Or just loosening you up enough to get a start on whatever you're writing.

Annoyingly the key is moderation. I realise you're just talking about marijuana, but my point is yes, drugs can have a place in creativity but it has to depend on the person to actually create something and don't expect the drugs to create anything other than a new perspective or experience or motivation.

Sorry if it sounds like I'm condoning drugs, its just what I think.

I smoked a stupid amount of weed for about 5 years and It did the opposite, I stopped writing novellas and music and started laying around getting off my face on weed then playing the Xbox or watching shit on tv with other mates who were also off thier face, didn't get a job or responsibilities because it took all my energy and motivation, glad I stopped, still miss it a tiny bit though but I'm not gonna start it again
It affects everyone differently though, I was just stupid, a few months ago I never would have put this but just be careful with weed, some people have an addictive personality, I didn't think I did then years later I had sold all my games etc for weed

  • ask your dreams for stories and have a notebook by the bed

    • Actually, I kinda already do that.
Dreams are certainly inspiring, and very odd,
but sometimes I forget about them.

I have tried to create a story just based off dreams I've had, but it just didn't end too well.

Stephen king had a reoccurring dream whenever he was struggling to finish a novel in which an old lady wouldn't let him escape his room untill he finished it, it gave him the idea of misery

Well, I was going to share some weed vs. inspiration stories, but it looks like you're pretty well covered on that end.

I think every creative person can sympathize with your lack of inspiration and encouragement issues. Any kind of art comes from within and it can be hard to motivate yourself when it seems like noone cares (or when they don't care enough, I think that's worse than anything).
I know that for me, I usually get tripped up by those "what are you doing, this is crap" thoughts. It feels like I have to fight my brain to lift my pen sometimes, I'm sure you know the feeling.
I've found that alcohol helps get rid of those negative thoughts. Nothing much, just a beer or a glass of wine at the most, just enough to shake that nagging voice out of my head.
I know you're looking for inspiration advice, but sometimes just getting past your own hang ups is enough to get the ball rolling. Just be confident in what you choose to write about and you won't need drugs or alcohol :)

I was an aspiring artist and I used to draw time to time, comic strips or pictures. These would be inspired by people I met, places I went, emotions I felt.

But, at a point in my early 20's somehow this wasn't enough. I turned to drugs to give me an edge and psychological depth in my talent. I got hooked on meth.

I produced many fine artwork like this, dark, detailed pictures that I was proud of for a certain amount of time. I did not feel full ownership of these works however, as I felt like an athlete who had used performance enhancing drugs to win gold.

I ended up with a meth addiction and in the later stages the drug had fried my brain where my creativity was rendered impotent. I did not produce artworks in this time.

These days I struggle for motivation as my brain was used to producing work under a supplement, under the influenve of drugs. Although you aspire to a higher field of perspective and influence i strongly recommend seeking out natural causes of inspiration.

    All the best.

If you want mad inspiration like a brilliant writer or artist then take adderall. Take enough for a few months and then your imagination will start to run wild. You'll have all of these crazy ideas like you'll think the government is spying on you, or you're on a mission from God etc...

Take those ideas and write them down. Allow your mind to make a story out of them.

A few famous writers and artist were said to be mad, but they probably just had a mental illness, and were in psychosis or in mania. Adderall will imitate those affects. Kinda like what speed will do.

But you probably shouldn't mess around with your mind like that, 'cause you just might never come back. Wouldn't that be terrible? To be stuck in a psychotic state of mind?

Weed is nothing. Meaning harmless. But I don't think you need it to be creative...

Weed won't really help you inspire creativity. Honestly do some real good research into LSD and if you decide its safe (which it is. Very very safe) I think of all the drugs I've tried LSD is the one you are looking for. Not nessicarily to give creative inspiration but for a fresh perspective and maybe some new meanings to gain inspiration from.

Weed is fantastic for inspiration and creativity if you only posses small amounts in most places its only a fine. Also magic mushrooms peyote krantom and DMT the stuff that makes you dream at night are all natural and relatively safe and good for inspiration.

  • You don't need drugs to be creative. Weed isn't that bad for you though. It doesn't ruin peoples lives like harder drugs do unless you're a dumbass in which case it wasn't the weeds fault.

  • There's nothing wrong with weed,as long as you get it from a reliable source.(i.e.-from someone who won't rip you off)

I think about it this way:

your brain is made of chemicals--everything you think, feel, and do has a chemical parallel. Drugs are external chemicals that can interact with our brain chemistry in a way that can make us have subjective experiences we would not have otherwise had. I would just say be a good pharmacist to yourself.

When it comes to weed, you'll hear contradictions, but the truth is that everybody has their own experience with it. For some it's depressing, or dulling, for me it was euphoric and inspirational.. and that can change over time as well. Weed is physically harmless, can lead new psychological experiences (you decide if you want to have new experiences, or if you're more comfortable sticking with what you know.)

I have done a fair amount of drugs. One thing I would say is that good art, of any medium, comes from the expression of emotion and drugs rarely give a true inspiration for any art because the drugs themselves contain no emotion, they are just chemicals. While they might help you relax a little to better connect with different emotions there are other ways that could be achieved.

I would say weed has no value towards inspiration at all, pretty much the opposite. It's fun but it dulls your mind during its effect.

LSD and mushrooms might help liberate your mind a bit. If something was going to give you inspiration it would be them.

Amphetamines are very helpful for doing large amounts of art but negatively effect your emotional well being over time.

The reason to do drugs is either for simple pleasure or to dull emotional feeling and pain. Inspiration for art in my opinion is not a good reason and it may disappoint you in that way.

Weed's not gonna make you creative man. You're gonna sit on your ass, eat and listen to music. Mushrooms might work better but you'll probably be too high to write. To be honest, drugs aren't gonna make you creative. They're fun but ultimately a waste of time.

Don't get me wrong, doing drugs (hallucinogens only) can be a very enlightening and exciting experience that you would probably enjoy but they're not going to take you anywhere and they're not going to provide the kind of inspiration you need to write. I used to think it did help but it never encouraged me to write, I never felt up to the task while high, but it did make me want to conceptualize sometimes. Although I do that all the time anyways. As someone who likes to write, my greatest achievements, creative explosions and what not happened completely sober.

Have you tried changing your environment or writing in a different one than what your use to?

    • I can't really change my enviroment, I live in a small house, and there aren't many rooms to go to.

I have tried writing different stuff, but I kinda got frustrated I guess, and went back to writing stuff that I am comfortable with.

I write on my computer only because my handwriting is, well, not so good.

I agree, I have written fully stories totally sober,
and I'm proud of those, even if my grammar in some of them was bad.
