I keep a lock of hair of my mom to cope when she passes away

My mother is still only 58, but she told me to pray for her and remember her when she dies. That really hit me and made me realize how she could die at any second.

She likes it when i play with her hair and she tells me it helps her sleep. I've been playing with her hair ever since i was 5. I'm in senior high school currently.

She uses the same comb as me. I'd always find clumps of hair tangled in it. I used to just take it off and throw it in the bin, but lately i began collecting it and keeping it in my drawer.

I'm also aware of this mourning tradition people had in the 19th century, where they'd get enough hair to intertwine it and turn it into a bracelet or just simply put a lock of hair in a cameo-like necklace or a ring. I'm considering to collect enough to do all three and keep some more locks to spare if she passes away anytime soon, i thought it was rather endearing.

I'm pious and i don't particularly fear death for myself, but i believe seeing my mother pass away would be very difficult, and keeping locks of her hair that i used to caress might ease my pain when it happens.

If you think it would help, I see no harm in you doing this.

The Victorians were a weird bunch, and almost as obsessed with death as modern Western culture is fixated on denying its existence and futilely hoping that it's optional and only comes to those who screw up or don't live healthily.

Your mother is clearly very important to you, and I'd suggest the best thing for you to do is to make sure that when she does go - as she inevitably will, sooner or later - you're not left with any regrets about things you never said to her.

I don't see how that would help but the placebo effect is still an effect. There is no right way to cope, so if you think it will help, whats the risk? I say go for it.
