I just can't reconcile this in my head

I feel absolutely horrible about the fact that I wouldn't date someone even if they were really nice but they were physically ugly.

I just don't understand it, it seems so unfair. Why are ugly people denied the wonderful gift of love due to no fault of their own. It just seems so disgustingly unfair.

And then I'll see a girl who I find unattractive, and I know that it doesn't matter how nice she is I just wouldn't date her. Does anyone else find this confusing and hard to accept?

People of similar physical attraction get with eachother. Don't worry, you will find your place.

It's fine because everybody has different tastes and beauty is subjective.

Yeah I know what you mean, I'm the same. Of course she wouldn't have to look incredible for me to go out with, but there are still some girls I wouldn't consider based purely on looks, which makes me feel really shallow. I do argue though that dating someone based on other superficial features that are outside their control (like confidence or humour or intelligence) is just as bad though. It doesn't make you any less shallow for choosing those features over looks, when they should all be seen as completely trivial when compared to the far more important detail as their virtue.

It also sucks how nearly every single song about a girl/guy talks primarily about how good looking they are, rather than how nice they are. And the way they say it in the song makes it sound like they're the best person in the world for being attractive, like they wouldn't deserve so much attention if they were ugly. It's so plainly shallow when you really think about it. Songs like that should talk primarily about how kind a person they are, with other less important things like their beauty and intelligence mentioned as an afterthought and described as being just a nice bonus.

      • But what about realism and honesty that's what's fucked up about it. These people writing these songs genuinely do value looks that highly and above kindness and me too which I hate about myself but its just true that's how I feel and thats why I made this post because it's such a horrible idea yet it's one I contribute to..

Yeah, I suppose those songs are honest at least. Still though, that doesn't make it ok. There's a lot of bad thoughts people have (like racist or homophobic thoughts) that they don't openly admit to, let alone release as a global hit song. I wouldn't be so hard on yourself, it's extremely rare that someone would even realise they value people based heavily on how they look, let alone realise how bad that is. Plus it is an inherent human quality to do this, it's genetically built into us to seek out the most desirable mate. It's in our nature, and nature is often cruel. Plus we've been pummelled by this message that looks are important by the media since we were very young children, it's near impossible to overcome that completely. All we can do is to try to be more aware of it in our everyday lives, and try to realise when we judge someone based on their looks, and then to stop doing it.
