I hooked my friends ice machine and water cooler up to his toilet

My friend got a new fridge with a chilled water dispenser and ice machine and asked me to hook it up for him. Seeing as on the other side of the wall is the toilet I just drilled through the wall and teed into the feed to the cistern. I don't see the big deal but I'm coping some flak over it.

I don't know if i understood it right, but if you did what i think you did, you need a "That's sick&funny" option.

  • The sink is all tiled in but I probably could have soldered into the copper line somewhere. He wanted immediate results and I didn't charge him anything. He's happy with it but it's just other people are a bit sus.

It's bright blue 1/4 poly pipe so it's pretty conspicuous when you go into the toilet.

People are like Wtf, oh shit, ugh yuk!

    • Its probably not that big a deal, if I read this correctly you tied into the water line BEFORE it gets to the toilet correct? There probably is a chance he will get some backflow, but its probably not any dirtier then the water all of us drink each and every day. You probably still should have put a ball or check valve in the line, but you did it for free, so you get what you pay for, lol.

      • He was a little hurt I didn't drink the water when i finished hooking it up, but that was more because I wanted the water to flush out the lines in the fridge first. Next time I visit I'll have to have a cool glass, funny thing is I hate chilled water.

Hmm, well....do those t's have a check valve so it doesn't draw water from above? If that's the case then no big deal. If not then that's kinda gross because toilet tanks aren't exactly where I'd like to get drinking water from!! Kinda scummy, and if you use those drop-in fresheners that would lend some unwanted color and flavor.

    • Theres no check valve but there's a ball float and valve in the cistern so no water can backfeed from the toilet.

Shit I wouldn't totally trust it if it didn't have a check valve. Some tank water would still get in there. I suppose it probably wouldn't harm you too bad (except maybe if you put chemical products in the tank) but it sounds like it's probably not proper by code. Was it a last resort or something? Like, was there a major obstacle in the way from hooking it to the sink? Or were you just being lazy?

Very funny, btw. You're up for a jerry-rig award.
