I have to touch things twice

For a few years now I have had to touch everyrhing evenly and fairly. for example, if i hold my TV remote in my right hand and change the channel to say, 3, i must then put it down pick it up with my left and although im now on channel 3, i have to mirror what i did before. I simply cant stop it, i once told my girlfriend about it and she said to touch her arm with my right hand and then shed leave. When she came back 10 mins later i was shaking and almost bruised her arm when i put too much enthusiasm into touching her arm with my left hand. I want to know what the f*** i have and if anybody else suffers from it please.

This happens to me as well! I have gotten a little better over time..but I used to have to look at everything twice..Sounds crazy but if I looked at something with mostly one eye, I had to do it with the other eye too. It flares up for me, where occasionally I feel the need to do it more and more. I really don't like how this always happens, but perhaps someday I will just be able to fight it. I thought I was the only one who did this, but I am glad that others do it too!

It's OCD (obsesseive Compulsive Disorder) I wish mine was as slight as yours, imagine having to do things/own things and constantly count in even numbers, I watch my MP# player say for instance, and when it to 8 seconds I shield my eyes, or close them, or look away, yet can't help looking back, if it says 10 seconds, I panic and look away, if it says 11 seconds, I feel a little eased, because both 1'a in 11 when added, equal 2 (like, 11 = 1 1 = 2) same with the time saying 12:50am/pm, that's a great time, because (12 -1 2=3 50 = 5, and 3 5=8, the last even number before you have to start adding, 26 is a great number too) Boy, I bet I've frightened quite a few folks now, LoL.

I used to have this exact problem, I would have to do things equally with my left and right arms and legs. Sometimes it was even more than twice, maybe four or eight times overall! BUT I think it was just a weird phase, I haven't done it for years because I told myself it was stupid and a waste of time. I think I still have mild OCD: if I'm particularly worried about something I start having to touch things a certain amount of times etc., but I always tell myself to stop it. You have to try to be strict with yourself, building it up until its evetually not an issue anymore.

Arhhh I didn’t know there was a name for this.

lol! I had this too, I had to do everything by the even number. if I touch something, I have to touch one more time. if I blink once, I had to blink one more time. If i look something, i had to look away and look one more time.

Sometimes when I’m not sure, I trust my instinct and touch one more time, but then build more confusion. And I just touch things till I'm satisfied. Then one day I realised this is stupid and a waste of time. I couldn’t stop it straight away but you start doing a lot less. And now I don’t have any issue. I sometimes blink few times.

I also had this thing too where if I go somewhere, I had to take the same path back. I wonder if that's OCD too?

When I touch my arm or something like that, on accident I have to touch the opposite side of it like twince or four times, it just has to be an even number. I wish I could tell my dad about this, but since he works at like a mental hospital he says that I'm going insane and asays that of I say I have ocd he will slap me.

  • InsanityEmbracesMe

Holy crap, I was just googling of this was legit or if I was going insane but others experience it too. I have to type with my fingers all around the keyboard so they both touch an equal amount of keys. I will have to LOOK at the left side for a long period of time in order to "fix" what I did, which was look at the right side for too long. Everything I do has to be neutral, equal on both sides. If I SEE something too far to the left or of someone is staying to the left too much I feel like I can genuinely feel it, mostly in my arms. It's so weird. It has to be even. That's why I can't play CS:GO surfing anymore, I can't stay on one side for too long or I flip. It's absolutely crazy and it sometimes drives me to the verge of tears when I can't succeed and making everything even. It's not lik objects have to be even, it's that things that HAPPEN and my sense of touch has to be even.

yeah apparantly its OCD, i dont have it as bad anymore because over time you grow out of it, but still when im looking into a certain spot and after i look away i have to look back, sometimes multiple times, or when push a button on my xbox controller sometimes i have to push the same button over and over (which makes me look like a total egg)or if i have a sip of a drink i have to take another sip even if its empty. but you should grow out of it eventually.

    Hi guys!

I had this same problem specially growing up,I'd say through my puberty years, or a bit younger.
In those times there was not really internet like today, so I couldn't really look for help, I didn't even know how to explain what was going on, it resulted in this weird compulsions, I had to even out everything I touched by touching it with the other hand, I had to always turn around in the same direction when I was in the shower... really weird stuff.
I thought it was me alone suffering this. It is true like somebody said here, that you normally end up growing out of it. Lots of kids have it in more or less degree, I just realized today that my daughter of 4 years old had some weird compulsions, that's why I start researching about it and I found this place.
I think one of the most important things is to talk with the kid/person and make them understand what it is, and that it is not that weird.
I remember as a kid having this feeling that if I didn't even out stuff with both hands, something terrible was going to happen, like the world was going to end or something... That's OCD for you..
But of course this exists only in our heads, it's important to understand that. But REALLY understand that, not just say it like it was obvious, you need to convince yourself that it is not you, it's your brain talking.
One of the books that helped me understand this, and helped me a lot in many ways, was THE POWER OF NOW from ECKHART TOLLE.
I would recommend to read this to anybody going through these kind of problems. The book talks about many things, but the most interesting thing for me is that it helps you understand that you are not your brain.
We people tend to see ourselves as we are "our brain", I mean, we localize our "center of command" behind our eyes. So when we think something, when we have ideas, or fears, or dreams, we think "I did that, ME, my "whole self" did that", but the truth is that is not "you", is your brain having all this ideas and thoughts, and you are not "your brain", at least not the way we use to see it.
This book helps you understand that it is not YOU, it is your brain having all this weird issues. Your brain is an organ in your body, like the heart, lungs etc. Just one organ like the others, and a really flawed organ in fact. So all this compulsions you are experiencing are created by your brain, the same way that you could have problems with your heart, your lungs, kidneys etc... so you need to see yourself as a whole being. You are not what's going on behind your eyes are between your ears, you are much more than that, your brain is only one more of your numerous organs, and it has flaws.
So you need to train your brain (like you would train your muscles or your cardio) to stop having this problems and improve its performance. This book helped me understand this, and helped me a lot to control this compulsions, obsessions, and all this kind of annoying stuff. I'm sure there is other books like this, look for them, start training your brain, you are not a slave of your thoughts, your brain doesn't have to control you, not at all! You have the power to train it, you can even train it in ways so you develop a tendency of having more abundant positive thoughts.
Really, it's incredible what you can do with your body by "training" it. And yes, your brain is just a part of your body, your brain is not your soul, or yourself, or what makes you who you are. It is PART of what makes you who you are, and you can make it better.
I know OCD is a hard thing to deal with, just don't give up, look around, inform yourself, and improve yourself as much as you can.
One last concept that helped me go through this:
If you have a weak body, if you are not much of a "physical" person, your brain tends to take control in much stronger way.
People that are physical, that train their bodies, do exercise, etc... tend to have a more powerful control over their brains too. If you have a strong powerful body, you will have more control over your brain, and it will be easier to subdue it to your will. The power of the body is incredible.
For example, if your brain is afraid of something, it will make your heart pump faster, so you will feel physically different, the "fear" will be affecting your body.
But if you can control your body, you can reverse this effect just by controlling the speed of your breathing. By reducing the speed of your breathing, you will be able to reduce the speed in which your heart beats, while calming your body. And as a reaction of that, you are obligating your brain to calm down too, not through your thoughts, but through your body control.
This is just an example, but it helps understand the kind of power that the body can have over the brain.
Try to have a healthy strong body, and learn to control your brain through it. I'm sure it will help.
Again, your brain is not you, it's just one of your many organs, and a very flawed one. Learn to control it through exercising it. Look for info about how exercise your brain.
    Good luck!

I hate it, touching thing in same number odd and all the time are even. Very depressed when i touch someones arm or any leg just once, its easy on my cousins or family, but not with strangers. Pushing button twice or any even number of a controller or switch. Seeing thing with even or in odd number(yea its weird),have to close eyes and open it again. The deadliest part before i went to sleep i usually touch my body parts many times if i accidentially touch it(makes my sleeping day bad):(Going on same path when walking but sometimes have to make it twice to make me satisfied and must return in dame path or it wouldshake me off.Its been around 9-10yrs.

Drinking two times in one times(its weird), when the drink is finish i usually act like theres more with even too using mouth. When touching object have to make sure both hand either touch the same object or anything. When i draw imaginary line using a hand i must draw it again. If my rhand act to catch inaginary thing my l hand must too. Lookinh left and right direction equally. When i knee down 1 leg i must also do this with another in the same estimation of time. I'm not a stressful guy but when i do this it gets quite stress. Saying thing twice sometimes.

I used do the same thing, with remote control. Even when I walked and I stepped on a stone, I had to come back and step on it with other foot. But it is possible to stop it. You may feel irritated and anxious in the beginning, but these feeling will go. You just have to believe yon can overcome the anxiety and stick with it. Just do not do it. It has to be practised.

  • I'll_Help_You

Hey, so yeah you have OCD (Obsessive Compulsive Disorder). I have a much lower level case of this than you do. For instance, when I walk by something and hit it with one hand, I whip around and touch it with another. And sometimes I HAVE TO GO OUT/IT THE WAY I CAME IN/OUT. It can get annoying sometimes, but it's not as severe as yours. For example, if I touched someone's arm and they walked away, I'd be fine. But sometimes I embarrass myself 'cause I have to back somewhere or run and do something just to satisfy myself. I hope it gets better for you. I have to turn a light on twice (on,off,on) before i use it; that relly drives me crazy if I don't. Hope this helped ya, man.

Also, you may want to go to a doctors about it. I discovered my difficulties with this when I was twelve, and the doctor, thinking I had OCD, refered me to CAMHS (child and adolescent mental health service). I used to get very stressed, my mum found out when, after a difficult day I came home and it was so bad, I was shaking because I was so, so scared. I thought I was crazy. I thought it would keep getting stronger, that I would lose who I was in trying to even everything out and I would become a shaking, terrified wreck who couldn't control herself. My mum was talking to my brother on the phone and heard me crying, really loudly, as I came into the house. I think I have some OCD too-but the balancing thing is definitely related to dyspraxia with me.

I know it's hard. You just have to try and cope.

    Comment Hidden ( show )
  • Lylola

    It might not be OCD.
I went to a doctor with the same problem. They thought it was OCD and referred me to someone else. Eventually, it turned out that it was a symptom of dyspraxia. It does not always occur in people with dyspraxia, but it does sometimes. There are ways in which you can cope with it. When you feel that you need to do it, try closing your eyes and shouting stop (only inside your head). It may not work immediately but practise makes perfect. You can also try to think about other topics. My advise would be comforting or reassuring topics-maybe a nice memory or a number sequence, the latter because it doesn't change.

    Good luck!

As i got to about 13/14 it seem to get much better an i never relized i had ocd untill i got older, i have anixity which affects me alot with school and day to day life! ( what you have is classic anixity which cause those problems you have like ocd) if you search for ways to control anixity and ocd it would help you so much and contact your gp as they have special support places which help you control anixity and problems like so. hope this helps you .

I would say it is 1% percent normal as that is approximately the percentage of OCD sufferers i.e. One in every hundred people
It usually starts at ages 9 to 12. Sufferers tend to be able to control OCD better as they get older
    Stress often makes it worse
I have had OCD since I was nine years old and it is a real nuisance.

But sometimes i think to my self why the fuck am i doing this, and so i crack out of it, but then it just comes back again.

Now I am 16 and I still have it. I hate this. But when I do these habits I feel like a good thing will happen and if I don't do it then bad thing will and happen and the things I wish want to happen won't happen. I feel like this. If I don't do things twice or many times evenly, then I feel like my wish wouldn't be completed and the things that I want wouldn't be done... I fell like those... I feel like those things wouldn't happen... That I want... Fu** even now while I am typing. I am typing twice... Shit. I don't know.... Ahhhhhhh I am getting irritated...
