I have to have a picture to draw from?

I draw a lot and i'm told i'm very good. My problem is I usually can't just draw something random from my head I need something to draw from. Sometimes I need 1-7 references just to draw something.

Is it normal that I need references to draw mostly everything?

  • I do the same. Even if I have a picture already made in my head I need reference to make it perfect!

Yes, I am the same way actually. So much so that I have actually been accused of tracing before...

It's very normal, I'm the exact same way. The problem that I have is that I don't have a good feel of angles. I can usually draw a character just fine from the front/side/back view but if I have to draw a character in pose or in a certain position that's where I have major problems.

An example I can give is trying to draw a Knight in a battle stance. That Knight would have his head facing forward, his right leg bent forward, his left leg bent with his left foot facing towards the viewers eyes, his right arm raised with a sword in his right hand and his left arm will rest on the side of his hip with a shield in his left hand.

This is where I struggle a lot and rely heavily on other drawings/pictures to create a " base " for me to have to work with.

OH my god! I thought I was the only one who had to do this! Apparently you're not alone. I excelled in my drawing classes when we drew from still lives and live models but now that I'm in my design classes (which tend to go for the more abstract) I am definitely not doing as well as I used to. And it doesn't help that I get super jealous of all the great designers in my class. >_<

    TL;DR? Yes its normal. XD

Cheyeah i was gonna post something like this. Its normal. I used to do it all the time. If i was still drawing, id still have a scott pilgrim picture or whatever else to support me.

Made me feel useless, more ways than one. :/

I loose track of proportions if I do not have references.

    • Same here. That's a huge reason why I need references.

you just can't translate 3d to 2d. so just don't go to art school. it's an extra skill level to do this easily.

Depends. When I draw realistically, then I usually want a photo and stick to it. If it's something else, then maybe a couple references help, but I usually try not to rip them off and add my own twist to it. It really depends on how long you've been doing it and how intensive.

    • I don't usually copy the picture exactly but I need an idea of where i'm going with the drawing.

When i draw, the original idea comes from something familiar to me, but I add onto it from my own thought and imagination. It's still completely normal for you to do this.

    • Yeah, sometimes I add some things of my own too.
