I have a really hard time drawing hands on hips!!

I have a really hard time drawing the hand when drawing figures with their hands on their hips. Everything else is easy, but when you get to the hand, no matter how many times you draw, and erase, and draw it again, you just can't seem to get it right; it still looks funny. Is anyone else like this? Dx

And I can't even get it right with REFERENCE pictures. [how pathetic -_-]

Hands are pretty easy for me. Just draw a beak on the thumb and color the fingers. Draw two stick legs. Hand turkey.

I agree... hands are really f'ing hard. One of the reasons that I gave up art.

Hand are very difficult to render in figure drawing. This is mainly due to the fact that they are made up of such a numerous amount of minute parts (bones, ligaments, cartilage, muscles, etc) that have very specific proportions to each other and to the rest of the body. If I draw just a hand, I find it fairly easy to render, but tedious, and I don't get much enjoyment from it. But if I try to draw a detailed hand in a portrait or full figure drawing, it always looks awkward. I usually avoid this though by just suggesting the shape of the hand, rather than trying to emulate it. I agree with cakeisnot and chucky that drawing hands often, and understanding the anatomy of the hand is the best way to become adept at drawing them. Although the thought of doing that seems to be as attractive and as tedious as a root canal. Also, if you can get a hold of some dead people, they make the best models because they never move. I took a drawing class at the morgue once and it was really valuable, even though it was fairly creepy. If you live in a large city, this might be an option for you.

Hands are hard for anyone who wants to draw the human form. I have pages and pages of attempts to draw my own hands. It's one of the best exercises: just lay your hand on the table and start drawing it. Do it again and again and again.

Me too; I can draw faces just fine, but when it comes to proportions and hand placement, my drawing always ends up looking weird.....I'd say study proportions and anatomy of hands/arms, and practice drawing them repeatedly.

Hands on hips can be quite tough. There are a lot of different angles to get right on the hand and hips aren't always simple either. Breaking the forms down into simple geometric shapes can help, but remember to check your proportions. It also makes sense to familiarize yourself with the anatomy of human wrists and hands, because wrists are complex articulation points that contain several small bones. If you treat them like a simple ball and socket joint they will always look wrong. It's also important to understand the contours of the hip that the hand is resting on, if you get these right the hand and fingers should look right too. Try drawing the hips first, then sketching some contour lines onto them to define their volume and then use these lines as a guide for the placement of the hand (you can erase them when you're done). Finally, also think about weight and the directional force of the hand, usually when you place your hands on your hips you are resting them there and the majority of the weight is on the heel of the hand rather than the fingers. This will affect their placement and orientation:)

    • ah, yes. drawing hands is very difficult for me as well. my art teacher said it was one of the hardest body parts to draw. i'm personally terrible at everything i draw, but hands are by far the hardest. so yes, i would say this is normal.
