I have a period once a year, is it normal ??

Hiya,

Sometimes only once every couple of years. Mostly there's the odd clot now & again but very occasionally it looks like a scene from Reservoir Dogs! I've got an underactive thyroid.

It's not normal, go get it checked. Make sure to insist that in addition to rechecking your thyroid levels, they check out all of your hormone levels as well. I stopped having periods about five years ago, and it turned out to be PCOS, a hormonal imbalance that can lead to a whole slew of serious issues. Not saying that's what you have, but it's not something to play around with.

Definitely make an appointment with an ob/gyn. I have the exact same thing - for me I have a cystic ovary & increased testosterone production (yes, girls have testosterone too), but it could be a thousand different causes. Your doctor will talk to you about it, maybe run some blood tests or an ultrasound. Usually a doctor will prescribe birth control to regulate your cycle. It's likely not a life threatening problem, but it can lead to problems later, for example if you become pregnant.

My period is never regular. We're all different. You can ask your doctor about it, but I wouldn't worry too much.

you have thyroid issue so that's understandable but try talking to your doctor he can give you something to regulate them coz from what i know absence of periods deprive you of some hormones whose absence can cause osteoporosis (mind the spelling) & also it could muck up your fertility get it checked soon & gooduck!

Absence of periods is more of a symptom of horomone imbalances than a cause.

I know. What i meant to say is that the absence of these hormones or imbalance = no period which can cause osteoporosis

Are you thin or taking birth control? Due to my weight, I usually don't get my period for 6 sometimes 10 weeks.

    Are you on birth control?

Not normal, considering you should typically get it once a month; twelve times a year.
