I have a large bump on the back of my ear how do i pop it?

I recently developed a large bump on my ear. It was giving me headaches for a little while but now it is just irritating. I have used scissors and tweezers. I am thinking I might cut it with a knife next but I was advised against it since I have so many veins in my neck and ear. It is not on the lobe it is on the upper back part. Any idea of how I should pop it would be nice. It will not pop and I do not know how I got it.

It is something beside a pimple 40

It could be a cystic pimple, like a nodule or a papule. It could also be a cyst in general, or the result of MRSA.

I would recommend that you put some topical cream or some tooth paste on it, if that doesn't work, try to pop it again and it that does not work, see a dermatologist because you could give yourself an infection by trying to get rid of it yourself.

    • You think it is a cyst? I was thinking about that possibility as well.

I haven't seen it but if you are having such a hard time popping it, it might not be ready to pop or it might be a cyst. I'd give it a few days, try out what I suggested and then go to a dermatologist. MRSA isn't too difficult to treat if it is MRSA.

        • Actually I have had cysts before and they tend to pop in their own. They never usually face me with this much of an issue.

Ok, I'm not trying to scare you but I knew someone who had this. It started with a lump in the location like you describe. It started as one, and over the years progressed to other regions beside the eyes, on the forehead and on the cheek bones, as well as on the chest. This person never went to a doctor and would try and remove these lumps himself.

Often they wouldn't pop or could not be cut off at home and there would be blood, and they would get infected which is pretty painful. After about 5 years his face was scarred and lumpy, and he always had one infected or just popped and needed to walk around with bandaids on his face because they were so hard to look at.

Long story short I thought it was going to be something really life threatening causing this or maybe a nasty skin parasite or something, but when he finally ended up going to a doctor her was able to have each one sliced, the contents pulled out (which apparently looked like thick beige string or rope, and doesn't sound like anything that could be squeezed out of a pore) and stitched up with one stitch for a small fee. This fixed the entire problem that he had tried to fix himself for years only making it worse and leaving lots of scars (when the Doctor does it it doesn't leave a bad scar).

So my point is to cut out the middle man (which is you) and go to your doctor instead. If it's just a pimple, well then good, you payed someone to put your mind at ease, and you can leave it alone in that case and it will go away in a few days. But picking at it rarely ends well.

    • Thank you for that. Did you ever figure out what it was? If it was stringy it was either a cyst or worms.

He couldn't remember what the Doctor said it was called but he said it was not worms at all. It wasn't catchy either- none of his friends or family got it. It was his own condition. It was kind of like his own body was making a collection of tissue of some sort (maybe keratin?), but it was not worms and not anything soft like pus that could be pushed through the skin either. I'm sorry, I wish I knew exactly what it's called.

Either way it was easily and cheaply treated by the doctor in just a couple of sessions (and he had them all over by then), where as he tried for years to take care of it himself and couldn't so it looked worse than it was- he made it worse, but it was really easy and quick for the Doctor to take care of.

When you go to the Doctor if it's not something that they have to remove (like if it was just a pimple or a boil) often they have good medicated ointments they can prescribe that only cost between $20-60 for a tube.

I just started seeing a dermatologist over the last couple years and I wish I had done it sooner. It would have saved me through my teen and young adult years. They are cheaper and more effective than I had ever imagined, but you do have to find a good one. See if you can get a referral from your Doctor.

You have a boil. My son in law had one behind his ear for a long time. It got very painful. We got turimic powder and added a little water to make a paste. Put some behind the ear for about 5 to 10 minutes once a day.. It will pop and blood and pus will come out and start to heal.... His took 2 treatments to pop...

Sounds like a cyst. Behind the ear is also a common placement for one too. There are youtube videos of people making an incision to release the puss inside if you are interested in it.

Don't try to "pop" it as it sounds like it's more than a pimple. This could be serious. For your good, you should leave it alone and book a appointment with a doctor asap.

    • What was it and how do you get ride of it? I have gone to urgent care for things like this before but I do not feel like going with something so tiny. It just seems like a waste of time.(though not ever for this type of problem)

There its this stuff at the drug store called drawing salve, ask the pharmacist to help you. It smells really bad and it has the consistency of tar. If used properly it will help you. It has for me in the past. Good luck. P.s. Don't want to scare you but it will be painful when it pops and all the pus inside is released.

  • It depends on what it is. I had a cyst on my earlobe which I could remove with an x-acto knife because it was a hard lump and I couldn't feel pain in it. The problem is that if you don't get all of it, it will just grow back. I ended up going to a specialist surgeon, having an in-patient procedure done which lasted about an hour, and it cost about $200 bucks. If it doesn't go away in a few months, that's what I would do.

I've had these a few times, i managed to pop them by pushing really hard on the other side of my ear and squeezing at the same time. good luck.

It must be nice to have such good friends that will pop zits for you... :P

    • Well I asked my friend to try and pop it but they could not get it. It is not from a piercing either.

I don't have any piercings so mine definitely weren't from that either.

The first time I got one of these I went to the doctor (well pediatrician at the time I was like 13) and she kind of laughed at me and told me to just put some benzoyl peroxide (over the counter acne medication) on it. It takes a few days but it will clear it up, and if you don't want to wait, it does at least make it easier to pop.

Of course I should give you the standard advice if it is just acne - that you should never pop them because it can case scars.

I've had something similar to this behind my ear lobe more than once. I managed to pop it and my headaches went away.
