I hate the amount of flash animation on tv nowadays

If you see today's animated cartoons and such on TV you'll notice that most of the time there isn't any traditional 2D animation and instead there is a bunch of CGI (which I don't mind) and flash animation. I really don't like this at all. I mean I don't hate flash animation at all, and I always loved it when using online sites, but I feel that flash animation should be used almost exclusively for web shows, like it was in the late 90's and early 2000's. There are quite a few good flash animated shows on TV, but I really do not like how 90% of all 2D shows these days are flash animated.

Again, I do not have any problem with flash animation, but I really hate how much it has replaced traditional animation. Now it looks cheap, lazy and ugly for the most part with exceptions.

Is it normal to think this way?

I noticed this too! I haven't watched tv in awhile since we don't have cable but i was sort of house sitting the other day, flipping through channels, lots of cartoons on, ALL IN FLASH, in that weird overly-bouncy style. it sucks. even older shows that began in traditional have switched over to flash. I know most people don't notice/care, but it definitely detracts from the art value for me. and yeah, some look ok with it but like you said it's more reminiscent of old web shows. I'm an aspiring animator, and even one of the art students i'd talk to at university said how everything must be done in flash these days, no one does traditional anymore, i guess because it's not as practical, but I think it has much more feeling to it...

I've noticed this too, and I hate it. Some of the Flash animation on certain shows makes me almost nauseous, and it looks and feels so cheap! I really miss the days of traditional animation, for both TV shows and movies.

    Oh god yes.

Flash (or Flash-style) animation is usually the cheapest, shittest looking animation, like the modern equivalent of Hanna Barbara.

Actually I feel that way about a lot of the CGI cartoons too, because they don't invest enough time to make 'em look good.

I love the old, quirky and detailed 2D animation as featured in: Hey Arnold!, Recess, Rugrats, Pinky and the Brain, Tom and Jerry, Batman: The Animated Series, Doug, SpongeBob SquarePants, Aaahh!!! Real Monsters, and so on. Adult Swim are still supporting a lot of decent 2D animation reminiscent of the 90s stuff. Adventure Time is also pretty detailed and interesting to look at.

But hey, at least America has a thriving animation industry. Meanwhile, over here in the UK, all we have is Aardman.

    • I don't think that Japan uses flash for the most part.

No - Actually I expect most of the worst offending American cartoons don't use Flash either. It's more down to the laziness (or cheapness) of the animators that results in that Flash-style.

I would say, though, that there is some pretty lame Japanese animation too. Animé is often homogenous in terms of appearance, but you can tell how cheap and/or lazy the animators are by the sheer lack of movement and low frame-rate in a cartoon. The Japanese often get away with it, because people (especially 'Western' audiences) are more forgiving and less discerning when it's animé.

This is already an old post, but I actually feel very strongly about this. It's gone from using computer assisted animation to the caliber of fucking Internet cartoons. The characters' movements are completely fucked, like they're made of rubber or something. It also seems that there's only one or two body parts moving at any given time.

I'm looking at you NEW SIMPSONS.

    • I like it when people comment on old posts. I'm still here and I still get notified.

New Simpsons is still hand drawn and animated like it was before. They just digitally colour it.

        • Except for the added CGI of course.

Animators are getting too lazy to use traditional animations now /: either that or they use it because it's cheaper. But I don't like flash...

Lazy mans animation. I flat out refused to take the flash class at my school. Told them it's a bastardization of what animation should be.

    • I don't really have any problem with flash animation as a style per-se. It's the fact that nowadays practically anything 2D animated is flash.

Flash can look great, it has more to do with untalented people on a budget and schedule using it. I can agree that the world would be a better place if Johnny Test was off the air.

    • I know. My Little Pony's flash animation is excellent.
