I hate suicide jokes.

I hate it when people joke about suicide. I am someone who has gone through being suicidal, and now that I am not in that position anymore I hate when people joke about suicide. Even more when it's someone who has never thought, attempted or has had a friend become suicidal. Now I am guilty of joking about it to, but that was before I was suicidal, now when I hear one of those jokes, I wanna cuss out the person who makes the joke. Is this normal??

I don't like them. Last week a coworker was making jokes about me hanging myself with a ballon, stabbing myself to death with a pen and cutting myself.
I laughed, but it wasn't funny because I've tried before..and it's something I think about doing a lot. So it wasn't funny. Death is not funny. I wish people would stop making jokes about serious matters.

I don't think it's really something to joke about, but a lot of people joke as a way to cope. My family is bad about this at funerals. It's not that we didn't love and respect the person, just the opposite. We just cope by laughing and making inappropriate jokes.

A Priest, a black man and a Jew walk into a bar. Then they kill themselves.

I don't find anything funny about suicide either. To me, suicide is a very serious thing. Not a laughing matter or something to joke about. Those people who joke about it, obviously don't know how serious it is.

  • So just because you went through it that makes it that no one has a right to say things on the subject in anyway they want to. I am sure there is a few people whos family have actualy commited suicide im sure they wpould be pretty anoyed on how you think just because you went through that stage that no one is alowed to talk about the situation in a manner they wish too. Fact is so many people go through suicidal thoughts even those who joke about it.

    Knock knock.
    Who's there?
    No one...they're dead

Get over yourself. Tons of us have been there. Just because I temporarily lost hope doesn't mean I permanently lost humor.

I hate those jokes and now for some reason they have become more popular with the whole "Just Kill Yourself" punchline. You know the ones that go like, if you don't blah blah or if you still blah blah, just kill yourself. Suicide is not something that should taken so lightly and in general I hate those jokes especially b/c those people are just trying to put someone else down for mostly stupid, ignorant reasons. And I'm ranting. But the point is, I agree.

I've never heard or thought of a suicide joke and my dad killed himself

And I agree with dappled-I made those jokes too: just to fool myself into thinking I was okay.
    It was a coping strategy.

I have been suicidal off and on over recent years and I'm surrounded by people who say things like "omg that exam was horrible I felt like killing myself" and it hurts to hear people say that.
It's so easy to say such a comment in an offhand way-but I will never have the courage to ever tell anyone that I truly felt like killing myself.

People often joke about things as a way of dealing with them. Suicide is extremely difficult for people to deal with.

Yes, there are some things that just aren't funny.

and ... people don't just have to think about whether the person they tell the joke to will find it funny.... they have to consider who around them will hear it too.

It's easier to learn a new joke than it is to pull your foot out of your mouth.

    Yeah, I'm the same.
I also hate when people claim to be or just lightly say they're depressed. Most people aren't and don't know what it's like. They think just cause they had a few bad days they're now in depression.

      I hate that too!

  • I think it's normal, I feel the same except I've never joked about suicide, but I didn't really mind those kind of jokes until I developed depression and got suicidal myself. Because my suicidal tendencies are getting worse, whenever I hear or see someone make a joke of it I just get so upset and angry, I just wanna punch the person making the joke and everyone who laughs at it.
