I hate money. hate it. is it normal?

Everyone I know obsesses over money. Everyone chases income as if it won't just disappear as quickly as it came.

I've recently heard someone say "When I see people, I don't see people. I see dollar signs walking around."

Most of us work jobs that we hate, doing things that make us miserable, so that we can have money: money that we simply get rid of immediately just to have a roof over our heads, or a car to drive, or bus fare, or ramen noodles on the table.

When will it end?

I hate money. I wish it didn't exist. Is it normal?

You hate greed, not money. I felt the same way you do for a long time until I actually considered the logistics of attempting to run any kind of society without money.

I think that bartering would be great. But truth is, people are greedy and it wouldn't work out.

The person who said we need money to survive is incorrect. We need food and shelter to survive.

And I really liked what someone said about how people's greed is the problem. That's a great point. Money could be perfectly useful if it wasn't equated with power and abused by the greedy.

I love money. It's great motivation. It does cause a lot of corruption but idk how society could function without it.

Do you live in a cave? Do you know why people want a bigger income? It is so they have something to eat for more then once a week you moron. How old are you 2? You are probobly living in mommy's basement eating Cheetos and playing your Xbox. Wake up and see the real world. What owns the house you stay in, what feeds you, what gives you gas? Are you really this dim?

Oh no that is fine what I was implying is that OP is a kid snacking on Xbox and typing on the internet all day and too lazy to get off his/her ass and get a job. So think they can talk about how stupid money is. Since their mommy is probobly paying for their lazy asses. Yes some adults eat cheetohs and play xbox. I like cheetohs. Since apparently some people are too stupid to realize that money is needed to survive and its what mommy and or daddy goes to work to earn everyday so their family is not eating from the trash. That or the OP enjoys eating from the trash and inspires to sit on a side walk with a can begging. They would probobly be too stupid to beg though. Since clearly earning a living is the oddest thing in the world to this OP.

        • DogTown13

I don't think you get it.

I believe that earning a living is very important, however I do not equate how much money I make/have made/will make with any level of happiness.

Instead, I feel that having a fulfilling, rewarding career will make me happier than a certain amount of money.

I would rather live on less money in a rural area and lead a simpler life than make 10x as much money and live in a dirty, congested metropolitan area. Some people don't agree with that (recently a friend told me that they would rather have a larger salary but live in a terrible place than live in a comfortable place for less money).

It makes me wonder, why DO people obsess over money so much? Wouldn't success taste much better if people simply loved what they were doing as a career?

As for me, I'm a hard working person. I've worked several jobs at a time and lived on my own. I'm currently studying for a Master's degree and I intend to start a business once I am done.

I live, eat, and breathe my career because it's what I am passionate about. No dollar amount can possibly sway me away from doing what I love for the rest of my life.

          Get it?

            Also, @RomeoDeMontague:

Your comments do not have any emotional impact on me whatsoever, and my stance on the money issue remains the same, by the way.

I'm very curious as to what your thought process is that leads to the decision to do/say things online that spread negativity.

Yes since I am sure starving is the same as being able to eat. I am sure a homeless person on the street does not enjoy being that way. Homeless get abused and many are raped on the street. So you are going to tell me all of these people are happy and having fun? Grow up and see the real world. You sound like an immature child. Grow up please. Mommy and daddy are not going to take care of you forever. Even if they do they should not have to. You might think being homeless, poor, and hungry is enjoyable. You probobly never been in that position. So stop taking for granted the fact you can post this bull shit on the computer. If you want to go live with the poor prove it. See how much money doesn't matter after. I really doubt you will be complaining after that. Money pays for the internet so off the computer. Since using one is hypocritical.

At what point did I say that I wanted to be homeless? When did I say that homeless people were happy?

I believe that one should place more value on leading a fulfilling life than on how much money they make. If you make a large salary, but hate every day of work - what's the point? Sounds like a miserable life.

Why not accept a smaller salary for something that is rewarding and fulfilling?

I am 26, I live 2400 miles from home, I do not own an Xbox and I don't eat junk food.

My main point is this: our society equates money with happiness. People chase bigger incomes because they think it'll make them happier, but studies have shown repeatedly that how much money someone makes doesn't have a positive correlation with happiness. In fact, if someone's basic needs are covered and they are around people they enjoy being around, their level of happiness is typically equal to that of multimillionaires.

The fact of the matter is, we live in a greedy, money hungry society: and I want it to stop. I think it will take a dramatic economic upheaval to break people's money-obsessed mindsets.

It's about getting rich-then you don't have to deal with the rest of the crap. There's no way around it. You can't replace money with something else.

The great thing about money is that it establishes equivalency between disparate commodities and services. It's certainly far better than the barter system.

Like it or not, work is a necessity for a society and civilization to function and prosper. If no one worked, who'd make your Big Mac or blue jeans or computer that you're using?

Of course capitalism has an ugly side as well, but of all the systems that have been tried, capitalism (with a mix of socialism) has proven to be the best, providing the most freedom for people and opportunity to succeed.

ya sometimes i feel the same way like you. most of people around me are greed, with no hesitate saying like money is everything. and most of them are enemies for each other because that one single shitty thing we call "MONEY". i know people here who fight over money, family heritages and something like that. and not rare, they are families. brothers-sisters, cousins, even parents. and they educate their children with money. i met a person who sound like he hate his mom so much or something, from the way he told me "i dont care about mom, just do what she wants to do. i won't know it. just give me my money".

GOD.... they are going insane. i meant, human relationship with each other is much more important than dollar pieces of paper. ok now you get your money over your siblings and fight with them deadly, you can buy what you want, bags, cars, houses, branded wardrobes. after that, what you have and wear will be just gone. your stuffs gone, but your bad relationships last almost forever, especially if you can't/won't fix it.

Money does not keep you alive. Food and water, basic necessities like that keep you alive ... MAN created money and we may be dependent upon it in this society but it isn't necessary to survive. Your comparison is weak.

You can get water for free out of a lake or stream, and you can keep yourself warm with an animal hide from something that you hunt and then eat - also for free.

A bit extreme, but it's still possible.

The argument that I'm more so interested in is not that money can or can't get you things you need in order to survive, but rather that money does NOT equate to happiness, though our modern society seems to disagree. It's sad.

That's great - but is it what you're doing, or the money that is making you happy? Is it the reward of teaching that is fulfilling, or when you look at your students do you see dollar signs?

I bet it's not all about the money. And that's the point. Money isn't what matters, and people need to stop obsessing over it.
