I hate it when sites remove their thumbs down feature

Often, websites that once had their thumbs up and down features change their rating system so that it only counts thumbs up. For example, Answerbag used to allow users to uprate or downrate answers, and they have replaced it with a rating system in which users can only Like an answer. Then when Google+ took over YouTube, they made the thumbs down feature non-functional, and now the rating system only displays how many thumbs up someone has.

I don't know about you, but I really hate it when sites do this. I mean yes, thumbs down may not be a nice thing to see, but at times, we need to send negative feedback to someone, and also, there may be a huge group of idiots on one comment section or forum at a time liking an incorrect answer (not just opinionated mind you, but factually dead wrong). Sometimes we need to banish and send a message to people that they're either being offensive, ignorant, cruel, racist, etc. But when those sites remove the thumbs down feature, there is often no way to censure such content. I'm actually happy that is it normal kept its thumbs down feature. I understand if it is about sites that are about finding support for your view, but I think it is bad if it's a neutral comment section or message board like YouTube or Answerbag (respectively).

In any case, is it normal to get really irritated when sites remove thumbs down and leave only thumbs up?

I wonder if the elimination of these features could be considered as an form of PC.

    • Not necessarily. In the past racist/sexist/etc. comments usually got a slew of thumbs down on YouTube. Now with the new format when they appear you can see how many people agree with them, but not how many people are against it.

I wish people would reply with actual written feedback not just down-votes, because people troll the thumbs down too on sites that have them, same as up-voting the wrong answers. I agree that it sucks on youtube though, plus a lot of times if you do try to reply there, the comments get deleted by the OP or someone even if you´re right but they simply disagree.

I'm going to expand on what shrunk said. I wish people would reply with verbal comments to explain why they are dissatisfied with a comment if they are going to downvote. If the person tries to start a debate and you're not about that noise for any reason, just don't respond. At least you gave them a reason for your dissatisfaction, they can be mad all they want.

I am not saying to take the internet or this site THAT fucking seriously all of the time, but it would be wise to do if you want to help foster an environment on this website that is conducive to sound intelligence and reasoning.

  • I don't like the thumb features, it turns any sort of issue in to a highschool teen girl group competition system rather than a "I disagree with your view and here is why" system.

I prefer issues to be discussed rather than decided on popularity as people tend to use rating systems with the "I dislike this because waaaaaaah", where as when you are forced to either get out or explain why you disagree you put your disagreements out in the open and capable of being proven wrong, in which we all benefit from finding out if something makes sense due to reason rather than popularity.

This community is just as bad as many others in that they like using the highschool teen girl popularity method because of "teh feelz" rather than responding and seeing if their response adds up or can be taken down.

I think it's a great idea! Because there are so many cry babies who get mad over someone else's opinion then thumb people down without trying to refute things. Pathetic.

    • I think that removing rating systems may be a good idea, but what I mean is that when people remove thumbs down but keep thumbs up. This allows for ignorant crowds to manipulate the ratings more easily, and there is no equivalent way to fight back. I don't mind the system like what YouTube had between 2010-2013, where thumbs down were present and could remove your likes, but was not shown.

    • I don't usually use the rating system, but someone thumbed you down when your comment fits in a lot with these types of systems, so I am going to bump you back up to 1.
