I hate how hard it is to get a medical prescription in the us

They make you jump through so many hoops just to get medication in this country.

I wanted to get a prescription for accutane. I've tried at least 20 different acne treatments by now and nothing has done the job properly, so I wanted to go on accutane because that's the only drug where I've heard of consistently good results. I understood the side effects of the drug, and was willing to take the risk.

I schedule an appointment at an open door clinic, have to wait 3 months because there's not enough doctors in the area, and then once I get a doctor to speak to, they're some hippie type that refuses to prescribe accutane to any patients. Instead they give me a prescription for topical retin-a. It's expensive as hell, and I use it as prescribed with no results whatsoever. So essentially I waste a ton of time and money and still have terrible acne. THANKS.

Now I want to get medication to help with my severe, debilitating social phobia. I've had it my entire life and it's prevented me from living a normal life. I don't need a doctor to diagnose me. I'm extremely uncomfortable in public. I sweat profusely around other people. I haven't had a friend in years. I had to quit school and my job because of it. I already know with certainty that there's a chemical imbalance in my brain, but I can't attempt to help myself unless I talk to a doctor. Setting up an appointment with a doctor would require me to talk to my mother about my problems, and I'd rather not make that a household discussion. If I were to do that, it may just end up being pointless like the last doctor visit was. I don't want to go through all that shit again just to end up having some hippie doctor who refuses to prescribe medication, and instead recommends useless therapy sessions for the doctors to get rich off of.

Is this not the "land of the free"? Can I not make my own decision as to what i put in my body? We're able to buy cigarettes and alcohol to damage our bodies for fun, but if I feel like I need something to improve my lifestyle, I have to go through all this bullshit in order to obtain it. So I guess I'll just go on suffering because the legal system isn't going to allow me to do anything about my problems.

As someone who got liver damage from Roaccutane, I cannot recommend that you consider anything else. I had disgustingly severe acne, by the way.

But to answer your actual question, American healthcare sounds completely fucked from my understanding. However, I also understand that prescription meds are advertised on TV. The whole set up is insane.

Cannot recommend highly enough that you consider anything other than Roaccutane.

We are a bit unsure why you would recommend something that damaged your liver. Were the results unexpectedly good? Please tell us a bit more so we can understand more.

        Respectfully,

        SPA.

I think its a glitch she meant to say she does not recommend it.

Oh its fucked up alright. In more ways than I can tell ypu!
But my boyfriend took it for one month and went from mentally fine to suicidal. Its like Chantix it fucks up your serotonin levels...among many other possible serious issues.

So many issues with it. I can't understand why it's still on the market. It's not like the side affects are even a slight possibility. They're pretty common.

I hope your boyfriend was better when he stopped taking it.

            Glad to hear it.

I had to have my gallbladder out after a trip to emergency recently...I hadn't had my liver checked in ages, and knowing prior issues, I thought it was the cause of the pain. They said there was nothing to be concerned about with the liver levels - they were high but not disturbingly so. I'd rather get a second opinion than just believe that, though.

I was told by the gastroenterologist in 2009ish that I would never reverse the damage. I took the advice of a couple of very knowledgeable naturopaths re supplements and diet. I feel healthier, which has to be a good thing.

I don't have the skin damage issues anymore, either. I used to burn at the drop of a hat (years after I finished taking the meds. I took them for a year when I was 16/17) and then the burn would turn to a bruise. Now I just burn a little bit, like I used to.

              That's luckier than some...!
I also had a friend who had Crohns disease after taking it.

I'm sorry you have to go through all that: I'm so glad I live in a country which has the dreaded evil "socialised medicine" the usa rejects. Can't you go over the border to Canada? I understand they do have some sort of medical system in that country which would be better than you're experiencing

Accutane is very hard to get. It causes birth defects so females have to sign a pledge to use 2 forms of birth control while on it. Its also known to cause suicide.

Change your diet and exercise instead of looking for magic potions to solve all your fake problems.

    • It's amazing how in 2016, with all of the scientific evidence proving otherwise, people who have never had severe acne or severe anxiety just assume these are "fake problems" simply because they've never experienced it.

Diet and exercise has hardly anything to do with acne. I don't eat sweets or junk food ever. My diet consists entirely of natural foods. I scored at the top of my class in physical education tests. I'm only slightly underweight. I assure you I'm in better shape than 90% of Americans.

Acne is almost entirely hereditary. The kids at my school who were like 200-300 lbs and drank nothing but mountain dew had perfect skin, and they would say the reason for their clear skin was "washing my face", when keeping a clean face does nothing for other people.

Social anxiety is also hereditary. While I got my acne from my dad, my social phobia is from my mom. My mom exhibits the same social behavior as me. It didn't come from environmental factors. I was surrounded by people growing up, and I never had any majorly traumatic events, but I still developed a severe phobia of people despite this.

It's something inherent in the genes, and science has proven that certain medications can counteract these conditions very effectively. To say otherwise with all the evidence is ignorant.

Hey I agree acne is genetic/ hormonal but there are things you can do depending on your gender. I consider myself somewhat of an expert on acne and I think I can help you. Message me!

America is the home of the rich, the 1% that is. You 99%ers are free to own guns and free to bitch about your lack of resources. Doctors work for profit. This leads to more income inequality, which we the 1% try to encourage. It is in our best interests to get everyone to produce more wealth, so debilitating conditions need to be treated effectively. But acne or toe nail fungus elimination is just plain vanity.

We get to be vain. You don't.

Which part of the country do u live in? let me guess florida, well the us healthcare system is one of the worst in the world, our politicians are too incompetent to get anything done about it. We have trillions to spend in pointless wars policing the world but no money to universalize our healthcare and do research for deadly diseases.

I know some grey market sites with some pretty strong benzos, no prescription necessary. But that can get expensive.

I would say find a Canadian pharmacy online for this. But Accutane won't be on there. It may be hell to get it, but that's because it's a hellish drug. Be careful.

I agree absolutely. It's insulting and infantilising to be denied the medication you need because....why?
Well, yes certain drugs can be dangerous or addictive. But if you're made fully aware of the risks and want to take them anyway, that should be your choice.

But it seems like doctors either don't explain the risks, and over-prescribe, So people are taking shit they don't need, and getting into trouble with it.
Or they're overly reluctant to prescribe drug X because word is, it's being overprescribed! - (or they think you only want to abuse it!) And if you're being treated with suspicion, that's probably going to make you feel, act and seem suspicious, especially if you've got a social anxiety problem... which only compounds the problem.

I just think, we're all adults...you know. If we have a problem, we should be able to use medication to address it. Especially with the amount of money that you've had to put into this. It's fucking ridiculous.

And it constantly surprises me how little doctors and psychiatrists seem to know about shit. That's just my opinion, but a lot of them just don't have a clue.

Anyway, all you can do is basically doctor shop (which you shouldn't have to do as a legitimate patient) but the system gives you no choice, as long as you're determined to get the specific medication that you need.
I've had very mixed results with doctors, you just have to find good ones, I guess.

    Tl;dr It's bullshit.
