I hate fake manners

is it normal to get pissed off when someone says thank you and they dont mean it?

i work in retail, and a lot of generally grumpy people come in, and no matter how angry i KNOW they are, they always say PLEASE and THANK YOU. seriously, i want to quit my job because of these people.

what is worse is when people tell me i should say thank you to them. the only people who do that to me anymore (besides my parents) are the ones IVE NEVER MET BEFORE.

its like they think the whole world is revolving around them, so i should THANK THEM for supporting my job.
thats not how it works, because i hate my job.

do other people experience this?

What's wrong with the little nice things in life? I hate it when I buy something and the clerk is frowning, never says hi, stuffs your stuff in a bag and practically throws it at you. I tell those people that I hope they have a better day. They look at you like you ruined their day some more. But too bad.
I also used to be in customer service. I put on the smiles because if a customer is happy they will come back. Keep your company in business and you keep getting a paycheck. Some customers are real ***holes. They think the world owes them and they will take it out on you.
This world has gotten to hateful. Spread some smiles now and then. You never know who's life you may make better.

I was expecting to read about standing up in the bus for someone/holding up a coat/.. not saying please or thank you.

I do avoid companies with bad customer service, and that includes plain rudeness.

Even if they don't mean the thank you, it's better than them ranting off about something else.

But I strongly believe saying "thank you" should not have to be an obligation in most cases. (For people who believe tips should be required, f--- you) You don't need a stranger to tell you what you should say. Those thank yous are just to make others feel better as if they made a big contribution to society.

But if you're a worker, you should say thank you and feel grateful because you're taking money from the customer. Without them, you're jobless. If you get commission too, that's even worse that wouldn't want to thank your customers no matter how rude they are.

  • I am the same way! I get so pissed when my friends come to my house and when given a choice of what to eat, they are so polite that they say that they'll have whatever I am having, even though it's not even a big deal to make two things! Also, I despise walking into stores and seeing the workers smile at me and ask if I need anything. I just want to slap them in the face!

  • These are called social graces - of which you lack any and, as such, see as fake.

Do yourself and your employer's customers a favour. Quit. Get a job where you do not work with people.

I'm the other way around. I'm not obsessed with people saying "please" "thank you" and "you're welcome" or anything like that, but I think it's a GREAT trait to have. It's just what being a courteous individual is about.

I think it's amazing that, no matter how hard life may get, you still have enough respect for people to say "thank you."

And don't read too much into it. If people are saying "thank you" it's not because they want to keep supporting the job that you hate - they're not thinking that far. They're just being polite and courteous.

It's just like if someone coughs and someone says "bless you." You're not really "blessing" them per se, you're just being courteous.

I think courtesy is something the world is lacking more and more, and if you can find someone that respects people enough to thank them, you should feel okay with it. Don't ever take it personally. It's just common courtesy.

sometimes it is hard to take in a thank you that isn't sincere. just like a "fake laugh" at a joke is annoying as hell. in reality it is the culture of manners that can keep someones sanity even when you might think you are going insane. it's a catch 20-20. if you are in a bad mood and someone doesn't thank you, you are upset. but at the same time, if you are in a bad mood and someone does a standard thank you...it can both keep your sanity and annoy the crap out of you. would you really like it better if that person told you really how they are feeling when you asked them how their day was? just something to think about

you are either young, incredibly naive or both. Don't you get economics? You should be happy that you have a job and YES you should thank these people for supporting your income. I hate when clerks at stores don't say "thank you" first. If I'm spending my money in your store YOU should thank me. I don't need to thank you for supplying goods and taking my money.
And you never know, by being kind to someone who is angry you may turn their day around. We need more kindness, not ridiculous unfounded anger like yours.
Have a nice day and thank you.

Yeah, you're going to change the tradition of uttering banalities.

These things hang around for a reason, you know. It seems everyone thinks differently. We each come from a different past. We each hope for a different future. And none of us has the slightest twinge of ESP.

We might meet hundreds of people everyday for the briefest of moments, and we have no clue as to their intentions.

These little utterances are a shortcut to saying, "I'm on your side. I'm no threat." And no one but the thickest idiot would expect anything more than that.

It's a bit like tipping. You don't generally tip someone because they did a great job or because you ever expect to see that particular person again.

You do it to condition them to treat everyone who looks and acts a little like you with respect in the future. And I and everyone else does the same. So the next time I get a meal, the waitress will remember someone (maybe you) who looked a bit like me and think well of me (and not spit in my food).

"Please" and "thank you" are free little tips we can give each other to help us all get along on this world over-crowded with strangers.

  • Uhhh actually I work in customer service and believe me when I tell you that you should be thankful they even say thank-you to you if they are angry. I have experienced many different rude customers who have made comments to me that were so bad that they wouldn't even be fit to give to a dog. Saying Thank-you to a customer is not fake because you are thanking the customer for buying a product that is making money for the company you work for, which in return by how many items are sold determines how much money and how many hours you will get. I'm not trying to nag I'm just saying when I recieve a thank-you it makes me want to come back, and if I buy something online and in the e-mail I get that confirms my order if there is no thank-you I usually won't buy from that site again. Just suck it up and give a smile, or maybe you are just not meant to work with customer service, but I hate to say it there aren't many jobs where you don't have to deal with consumers and it really sucks but it's American culture and capitilism is our country's lifeline, so unfortunately it just has to be done.
