I hate excessive profanity

By excessive, I mean as in when people use swear words even when it serves no purpose. I tend to hear people these days using the f-word in practically every other sentence. I'm not some prissy who thinks nobody should swear ever, but I'd prefer it be kept for when someone has strong words, for example "FUCK I LOST MY LAPTOP!", and not completely casual and used to describe practically anything.

Is this a normal attitude?

It depends on the situation & the person.

I swear like a fucking trooper but I think most people who have spoken to me would not say I swear excessively (except the easily offended) as it comes across very naturally as just another emphatic word.

I hear teenagers swear very little but it seems excessive as it doesn't come naturally & you can tell it's put on to sound tough. Little cunts...

Hahahahaha @ I don't swear excessively. You can't breathe without saying "fuck" under your breath. You gave me Tourette's.

I kinda do swear excessively in certain situations, OP, but I'm easily capable if turning it off. I tend not to do it in public, in front of kids, around my family and more conservative friends, but then it all comes out later...when I'm talking to someone who swears a lot or here on this very forum. I just let's the swears flow.

Shit, I'm just trying to keep up with you!
You know as well as I do that you've been the cause of me saying "fuck" under my breath on more than one occasion, & sometimes repeatedly at that...

But I do agree that it's important to be able to control yourself when necessary.
That's different for everyone & for me personally there's not a lot of times where I have to watch myself

    • I don't mind if someone is angry and swears, or if it is done to grab attention. But I don't like it if it is used completely liberally like "Today I fucking walked up to the fucking postbox and fucking opened the fucking door to get my fucking mail and I saw a fucking message which said that I need to get my fucking braces checked up."

So you find it unnecessary, not offensive?

        That's fair enough.
        I'm somewhere in between.
It is definitely part of my standard vocabulary but not quite as regularly as in your example. Possibly close though...
But as CD mentioned I can also turn it off when it's called for.

        • Yes, I don't find it offensive. It is more of a "really?" reaction.

            Yeah that's fair enough.
Even as someone who swears A LOT I consider some other people to swear excessively.
It depends more on how it's done & whether it seems like part of their genuine self or put on to try & impress...

You probably would've hated my kid version self. I hate that version of me. I used to curse like a sailor. I wanted to be cool and I would get really nervous. (etc.) even my friends would have to tell me to tone it down and that it was annoying. I'll give you an example, "Mother Fuck Shit". What the hell was I thinking?! Why did it never occur to me that this phrase was so vulgar. It is implying that a mother loves to fuck shit. She's into scat!

So do I. For this reason and some others, I've been trying do my best to refrain from explicit language.

I agreee 100%. People cursing like a sailor ticks me off. For me it is a respect issue. When others cuss like that they aren't respecting any one around them.

      How can colloquialisms disrespect you?

Lol it wasn't for no point though. It literally made me ANGRY that I had to go turn the light on at 1am just to see if it was set because some idiot contractor didn't spring the extra 14$ for The led lit version. Aaaaahhhhhh! It still pisses me off. I'm over here jamming the button with my finger harder and harder and harder expecting it to light up haha, NOPE

OMG I do this all the time. The lady has been yelling at me about it too. "Why the HELL isn't there a light on ur AC thermostat?!" Then after grumbling under my breath for a min, "must you curse all the time?! Fuck this, fuck that, fuck you, fuck me-" To which I interjected,"lol okay!" Totally missing the point.

I agree, people think its so terrible to swear but its a lot better than stealing or harming someone or punching a wall.

I have never understood why something as trivial as words would offend someone. Whether it be curse words, name calling, racial slurs, it's just a fucking word.

That's just how some people talk. I guess I might swear a lot and not really think about it, because they're just like any other word to me. I try to keep up more of a filter when I'm talking to people that are older or more conservative.

I think the f word is good in small doses, and it shouldn't be used for everything. It should only be used where it's supposed to be used and if it makes a point

Excessive profanity is inarticulate language. It says the speaker is retarded.

Excessive use of the same word does make you seem a little retarded. But if used sparingly to describe an object or person, it actually shows intelligence. Also, a person who uses curse words might be someone who you can actually trust or share secrets with. Like gangsters and the mafia. And no...I don't mean "gangstas". XD

Absolutely. Occasional use of the adjective "fucking" adds authenticity to a conversation.
