I hate art

I hate art.

Its not the art itself that I hate its the pretentiousness that goes with it. Art is just a pretty picture, thats fine, but i hate the wannabe intelectualism that goes with it. People that try and get "deep" into it. That think that it is more than it is.

Art is a none-subject. I cant believe that people can STUDY it at school and get a degree in it. I think its a conspiracy between the complete dimwitts of the world with the view of fooling the rest of the world into believing that they are actually clever.

Artists contribute nothing to the world. "They contribute beauty" you may say. No they dont. When was the last time you saw some art on your way to work? Art is also bought buy people with way more money than they deserve. If you have a couple million quid are you gonna spend it on healing the world or a pretty picture?

Modern art is the definition of mindless indiviudals conning gullible fools into believing in this nonsense. Tracy Emin, what a retard, and, predictably an expert in her field.

I love art, but hate the pretension as well. I was an art student for many years, and HATED the "intellectual" artists. I am a visual person. Art touches every aspect of our lives-think about package designs, computer animation..."art" is very broad. And yes, even just a painting on a wall can make a room drastically different. A well chosen piece of artwork can set the whole mood for an environment.

ok, yes you see art in your way to work everyday, you see it everywhere... i hate it too when people try to find deep meaning to a brush stroke and sh!t like that but some art does actually have meaning (historically speaking) because it represents the ideals of the period of time where the artist lives, other than that there is not much to it.

    i love art,but i agree,it a pain in the ass to hear,"oo, it's so bold,so brilliant,so,so, 21 first century!!" and i'm like "dude it"s a picture of girl smiling on a piece of paper,relax".

fist off, i have to somewhat agree with you about modern art, but i did know a woman who could paint with great skill, and then decided to paint subtly colored squares for the rest of her life, and i doubt it had to do with just wanting to turn a profit. she already had the money earned from her more articulate paintings of the past and i think she finally just wanted to paint how she felt without complication...also, i think about nature. a certain color of sky or something very subtle in nature can have a great effect upon me, so why can't artists create a sublte piece that also has a more artificial, but equal effect as our natural world? (sorry, tangent)

so..birds of a feather...or to each his own...or some other cliche that equals that sentiment. maybe you are not visual (sorry if i presume incorrectly). i am, and there have been a few paintings in particular that i am very attracted to because they give me the same feeling/thoughts after looking at them that i have also gotten after reading an entire book that actually had a long-lasting effect on me. so...some people can stare at many things--their minds take off and create new thoughts/feelings with what they see...many people read books, and the same happens. visual communication is everywhere and very useful for many people, in different ways, and i think that includes art. yeah, alot of art pisses me off too, but when i was younger i loved most of it because paintings/drawings/etc can tell stories, and if you are on the same wavelength as the artist, you might be able to tell exactly what they are saying, though you might never know for sure. either way, it's up to you for the most part to interpert exactly what you will interpret. no one can force you to see or understand something, whether or not that was their origininal intention. looking at a painting/drawing/etc is way quicker than having to read a book, and i do love books as much or more so than visual art. either way, we are learning something about ourselves when we think, feel, or realize something in response to something that someone else has created. the selling of some if not most art at extravegant prices is ridiculous, but there are also alot of smut authors who sell millions of copies of books that totally (subjectively) suck, and they become rich off of them. not quite from the same snotty place of culture that you hate, but the outcome of profit is the same for the authors at least. for instance, i read and consequently hate the davinci code (very popular book at one time) and i think it's total crap, but so many people love it....same goes for the popular book Lovely Bones...there are trashy celebrities and histrionics whoring and displaying their thoughts, woes, and bodies to the fascinated public for money, even though they actually aren't doing a thing for me (and i assume not much for many other people)... unfortunately, that's how a substantial part the human world is turning right now...

The post concerns art not the arts, which I think a lot of responders have confused. I see more merit in, say, music as an art form, because it speaks for itself (excuse the pun), as I see more merit in a picture that speaks for itself without some art ponce having to try and explain to me the hidden depths.

I recently came across some modern art on the London underground system while I was with my artist friend. I scoffed at it, proclaiming that it took neither creativity, nor technical skill to produce this piece that was "commissioned by the London Underground". To which he replied "you can't say that, it might have a meaning behind it". Three stripes across a canvas is still three stripes across a canvas no matter how you look it at, no matter how good a lawyer you try and get in here to convince me otherwise.

I guess what pisses me off the most is that art that needs explaining (beyond date, location and subject) is that a piece of art should mean different things to different people. One art ponce telling me his impression of it does not make it correct. What's more interesting to me is that these art ponces are not even artists themselves, they just pedal their shit to gullible rich people. That's why I think that the culture and society surrounding art just stinks of the emperors new clothes.

Also, my distaste of the culture that surrounds art should not be taken for hate of art itself, I think the first line may have been misleading!

All the examples cited in the above posts also cite examples of "every day" art; buildings, product designs, and in your case mathematics. But these people are the exact same people that will say "art has to have no purpose except itself". Thus rendering all these examples void. They may be artistic, but the fact that they were designed for a purpose prevents them from being called art.

Mathematics, is more of a science because it has a purpose and follows reason. Though its depths may be beautiful, the fact that it is determined by reason and purpose would, according to most of these artists make it anything but art.

Also, in response to all these posters that just go "you only hate it because you don't understand it". I have lived with many art students, many of whom share, to varying extents the same view as me.

And if art just has to provoke a reaction, it seems I'm the next Da Vinci ;)

  • I LOVE art. I love to write, draw and create. With art you can just do whatever shit you want, and there's no boundaries to what you can imagine and draw.

Of course I do find some art pretentious. RANDOM SQUIGGLES ARE NOT ART; THEY ARE RANDOM SQUIGGLES THAT ARE DESCRIBED AS SOMETHING ELSE. I mean sure you can add colour emotion to it, but some people draw like a line and say THIS REPRESENTS MY FEELINGS TOWARDS TAKING A POO AND HAVING A SHOWER. I hate it when people do that. I appreciate art like Picasso as it's interesting, but some of it's really pretentious.

Other than that I love art.

If you hate art so much, then maybe you should sign off. I mean it must be very annoying to come to this website knowing that there are designs all over the web page (including the pictures of the sheep and the text) and the fact that it help represents you're personality and expression as a person, whom in a sense is not like the norm.

It seems as though a few people took your opinion a little personal. I am an artist, but can quite understand how you feel. I wouldn't confuse art with the people who like art. The two don't always go hand in hand. Your disgust does prompt me to believe that you are an artist yourself though.

    Keep writing.

I can walk or drive through my city any day of the week and see art on street corners. I don't know what city you live in, but here in Chattanooga, we understand the value of art and support it and the people who create it. If you want to live in a cold, dead metropolis with no signs of creativity or beauty, then be my guest.

Secondly, I am also studying art in college. I am learning my craft and its history. My peers and I learn how to use our tools and materials effectively. We learn how to capture the human figure on paper. We learn about the builders of St. Patrick's Cathedral, the giant stone pharoahs in Cairo, and the illustrations of Botticelli. We are studying history, architecture, religion, and geography, all at the same time.

Some of us will go on the illustrate the books that parents will read to their children. Others will design the logos for the new coffee shop around the corner. And still others will use their talents to teach young people that yes, there -is- more to life than a nine-to-five job, American Idol, and Facebook. They will be taught that there are things in this world called imagination, creation, exploration, and craft. Things that give a sense of purpose and fullfilment instead of simply occupying one's time.

Don't look at the world of "high art" and think that is what art is all about. Art is for us people down below, who really need it.

Well, it depends what you define as art. I consider music and film to be art and not just paintings and drawings. While I respect painters for their work, I doesn't do much for me. I listen to music and watch movies because they're entertaining and good alternative to the hum-drum boredom of everyday life. Have you ever bought a CD or a paid to see a movie? Then you have been a "gullible fool" who has supported art.

Definitely an opinion borne of ignorance. I have studied art, I have a diploma in Graphic Design, I will soon graduate from 3D Animation, and soon I will be studying Video Game Art.

You state that art is just about beauty and being pretty, but what you do not realize that it is a universal language. Most art has function: a message, a use, an understanding. "People that try and get "deep" into it. That think that it is more than it is." Sometimes there is, a metaphor for instance.

While there is a lifestyle that is often promoted through media, it is certainly not present in my artistic life and career, nor is it in any other person I know. Your problem is with the media, conforming and stereotypes.

People study art because there is an academic understanding of the application. There can be unity, symmetry, asymmetry, contrast, monochramatism, a few for example, that define a piece. People study art usually to improve their skills, and very few just for the information provided. I for one thank my artistic schooling for my advance in understanding and skill. If it is a conspiracy, it is a quite elaborate one that has been developing since art was taught, thousands of years ago.

Art is everywhere you see. Your computer monitor is art to the one that designed it, the advertisements you see everyday are usually carefully designed with the viewer's perspective in mind. There are many non-profit artist associations that raise money for people in need, Graphic Designers are needed for advertisements for the largest charities. So, "When was the last time you saw some art on your way to work", is ill founded, and again I repeat, borne of ignorance.

Many artists have helped to shape new ideas, break boundaries, foster equality. And many contributed to the ideal that art is not just about a pre-packaged idea of 'beauty'.

Auctions for dead artists work is a social thing, an icon of power, and unfortunately a conversation starter, but it is most definitely not the driving factor of what art in general represents. Of course very few buy a piece of art that is worth a million dollars just to apprectiate it, but some do to donate it to a museum where it can be appreciated and studied.

As you wrote " When was the last time you saw some art on your way to work?", It appears that you don't know much about arts. But I do!I have studied arts for a long time.

Now coming to the point, I would say that you are right but your thinking is not mature enough. If you are young I must congratulate you. You have reached a place in intellect, very few people reach. 'Art'as the popular concept implies is so pre-mature an idea that it cannot be used to make sense of its own existence, let alone the sense and meaning of this world or our existence etc. it is a dangerous concept.

Like you, my friend I am not against arts.Like you I am only against the "pretentiousness that goes with it". If you want to know what art really is then study mathematics. here art has the right role. It motivates us mathematicians but the path we take is reason.

You will find many people like the commentators of your post. I wonder how aberrated they are that they cannot read 15 lines worth of reason. They are living their lives on borrowed common sense.

Art is one of the most powerful driving forces of culture. It is a logically indisputable fact. Arguing against the point that art HASN'T been a detrimental part of the evolution of culture and society world-wide is foolish.

Whether you hate it or not is not important. Whether you appreciate it or not is important. To not appreciate a necessary element and result of human nature is only a reflection on your hasty ignorance.

Plus, so called "pseudo-intellectuals" can't be "pseudo" if they, according to you, have the capacity to fool most of the world. And for what purpose anyway? Fooling for the sake of fooling?

    Okay....wow.
I am an artist. My entire life revolves around my career in art, and so far I have only met two people like you who obviously have NO understanding of what art really is.

First of all, art is not a pretty picture. Art is not "eyecandy" as I've been told. I can't stand people who really think that.

Art is something that raises someones conciousness. Something that makes something think or feel differently than they would have before. Art is not meant to be realistic or perfect or pretty. It's not about the actual image at all! Art and science are basically two approaches to the same thing, asking questions and finding answers. A search for knowledge. Of course it is a matter of perspective, and one piece of art will not be art to everyone. It's like listening to a song. It makes you think about certain things. Makes you feel sad, happy, angry, etc. People feel these same things by looking at at visual art. I would NOT be spending everyday of my life focusing on this if it were just a pretty picture, trust me.

I guess some people are just art retarded.

HAHA i go to art school.

do you like movies? like music? that is art as well.

and indeed i hate minimalism and art that artists talk more than what's in the piece.
However its those minimalists that took us away from the "pretty picture" era of art.

but lets use your going to work example. the buildings you might walk by where designed by an architect, whom is also a terrific draftsmen. You might be wearing clothes that is designed. A tie with a print. might be holding a cup of coffee. the logo on coffee was made by a designer.
When you get to work you go on your computer. Perhaps have a desktop photos and have decorations around your desk. Thats in a way is art.
Infact some offices might have a sculpture or a foundation in front of the building.

Indeed i dislike the fact large pieces can only be brought by rich people. But its only one factor of art. I am an illustrator. chances are you have read comic book, that is art.

I think our author here is an artist of a different breed. His prior opinion states that art is pretentious and useless, the art he gave as an example was "fine" art. He took the "Pinnacle" of what he considered to be art, and assaulted it. What he did not realize is that what he considers art to be extends much farther than that. I haven't taken any art theory classes or anything of the like; but I usually classify art into two categories, Mechanical and Facade. The Facade art is the paintings, music, design, and films. They are the things that give the world its shape, tell us what to think and look at, and make everything more sociably pleasing. I consider Mechanical Art to be things like Architecture, Automotive Designing, and the like. These are the things that give the Facade a reason to be there, they are the guts while facade is the glory. But are very necessary, which is where our artist here was flawed. He believed that because the Facade Art did not contribute in the same manner that Mechanical Art did, it was useless. But both are needed to make society run as efficiently and effectively as possible.

I'm an artist myself and let me ell you that art is everything around us. Artists do contribute to the world.. look at the Pyramids of Egypt, that's art, it's beautiful. It's purpose is to keep the mummy's protected. Look at the Versalle Palace, it was made years ago and it's still standing today!

I do understand you somehow. When people try to analyze a picture profoundly and get to conclusions like "the artist wanted to show the world a message with this portrait..", All I think is "what if they just painted that because they wanted to, what if it has no meaning at all, not even to them?"

So I guess it's normal to think that, but I don't think it's normal to hate art. Because once again, even the computer you're reading this from is art. Life itself is art.

Well, it depends on the individual. I like art and actually volunteer as a student teacher in the Visual Arts department. Some individuals consider the subject as B.S. but not for me. Ever since humans have existed, drawings and paintings have served to tell stories (i.e. Lascaux Cave). Thus, experienced Visual Arts professors would conclude that art is a form of visual language. Now, from what I can tell, you are specifically referencing to paintings. However, Visual Arts extends all the way into architecture and beyond. There is plenty to learn and a lot to achieve. Without creativity our world would be plain boring. Our world is not strictly about science, mathematics, history, etc. There is far more than you can imagine!

Art is subjective, fluid and, if good, can bring joy/sorrow/beauty to the world.

Some people can enjoy art quietly but some feel as though they need to express their appreciation by talking about it or by reading into it.

It's a person's passion much like film reviews or book clubs.

I understand your feeling towards crazy and cold modern art. And I don't support the idea of artists explaining every bit of their Art Work, a successful piece would speak for itself.

But, you should be aware that there are good and bad sides for everything. And hey! your ipod is an Art Piece, as much as your couch is .. Yes that is called Product Design.. Art students do study valuable things like furniture and home appliances.. And it is not about doing some sketch about a "nice looking" chair. We do study physics, otherwise you would have been lying on the floor by now cause maybe your chair has been broken to pieces.

I don't get why you do object about these things.. yet your house ain't empty after all!
