I hate "art"?

I'm in a "Advanced Drawing" class in my high school. I'm starting to learn more and more about different artists and different forms of art. I hate that almost everything is considered "art" and almost everyone is considered an "artist." They say that the definition art varies by person. Doesn't that mean art could be anything. That is absolute crap. The way I see it paintings, drawings, specific sculptures, tattoos, and specific songs are "art" and not much else.

Is anyone else fed up with this?

Everyone has their own definition of art, like Mando stated.

Jackson Pollock randomly splashed colors on a canvas, and that was ''art'' and to many people, considered brilliant. However, a few people I know, including a former teacher, thinks that art is the kind of paintings you see involving beautiful countryside scenes. While that IS art; art entails many things.

Basically, what it boils down to, is what you consider art. For everyone, it's different. But don't knock people who create things just because you don't like it.

Crap. Art is not in the eye of the beholder. Thats what losers say to justify their crap. I teach art and design but we don't teach OUR specific visions. We teach the craft, composition and proportions. There is certainly good and bad art, and thats not to say its just my opinion. Artists do art for other artists. I design for other designers because the mass opinion is uneducated and unsophisticated. Like a wedding photographer whose clients are brides and mother-in-laws that just want to see eyes open and a pretty dress. They don't care about composition because they're ignorant in visual matters. 99.9% of the population is ignorant in visual matters.

I'd rather be a poor artist than a rich sell-out.

Anything people do for creative or aesthetic purposes is art. Any other definition is arbitrarily narrow.

For example if you build a house just to keep the rain off your head, that itself is not art. But if you nail an extra board above the doorway, for no structural purpose but simply because it looks nice, then you've crated art.

Of course you art entitled to your opinion on whether any particular creation, or even whole medium is "good" art, but to claim it isn't art at all is silly.

It is all relative. One man's trash is another man's treasure.

I understand. I go to one of the best art schools in the world. I get so tired of looking at things that don't have either skill, effort, or emotion.

What needs to be touched on is that the definition of art is not as loose as people make it out to be even though there are limitless kinds of art. What holds up as art are pieces that can be clearly critiqued using the principles of drawing and design. For instance, Jackson Pollock's works were spontaneous and randomized abstracts, yet they had the element of unity to sustain them.

I say, just do whatever, just dont do it simply for reconition. I feel that those who simply put a dot on canvas with a long explanation are in it just for reconition. If I decide to draw a car, or put designs on a bottle with spray paint, I just wanted to. theyr'es no deep meaning to it, and if you see one in it, well, that's you. I dont care if you consider it art or not.

I see what you mean. In simpler words, you're talking about artistic standards being lowered. For example, contemporary art is often just a dot on a canvas, and people interpret it in crazy ways. When in reality, it's just a dot.

But really, that's the whole concept of art. Perhaps it would be different in the Dark Ages, but art is really just a mode of self-expression. Open your mind.

I understand that, but there are good artists, and shitty ones. It's bringing yourself above that line of 'he/she is very talented artist' and 'he/she is one-of-a-kind.' Go above and beyond, make youraelf stand out. That will be the difference between you, and joe-shmo. If you and everyone else in the world is a CEO, then show why YOU'RE better than the rest. Make them admire you. Make yourself stand out, then you will be the one on top.

I actually once heard of a man who would put paint in his anus and shit it out all over the canvas to make art.
