Before you think this is a racist rant, it's not. My thing is, just because my skin is dark doesn't mean im African American. When a Mexican becomes a citizen, they are Mexican American. When a Japanese woman comes over from Japan and signs, she's Japanese American. But a Brooklyn-born black dude is always African American. Whether or not his parents and/or g.parents come from Africa. What the halibut? It simply irritates me, the ignorance of potential racial diversity. Is it normal to think this?

    I'm with you OP. If you are born here, you are an American. That's it. I'm sick of dividing people people into categories. How are we ever going to get past color if we keep segregating ourselves.

    You're absolutely right, I don't understand why some people think that calling somebody black is racist. By that logic, all the black people in Africa should be called African Africans.

      No....African American applies to people who've had ancestry in slavery. People from Africa should be called Africans, just like we are North Anericans. Africans aren't American citizens.

      So why aren't white people called European-American? They originated in Europe which means they are of European descent.

    I work with an African... from Uganda. He doesn't understand why the guy born in South Central is considered African American either.

    American African anyone? Human works too. Brothers? Sisters? James Brown's Funky People (oh stop it. Just google it and get way over yourself!) Slaves and former slaves in America fought on both sides of the Civil War. Most people in our country identify themselves by region, lifestyle and socio-economic status. While we all bicker and wine about such trivial things the powers that be continue to brainwash, rape, steal and conceal the truth of what really matters...clean water, food and air. Without them what freakin difference does it make what language we speak or what color our skin is or what label we choose?

    Because black people arent originally from america! They originated in Africa, which means they are of african descent.

    It is because your ancestors originated in Africa. They may have immigrated to another country after that, but they are still African.
