I guess we for got he's black..

A group of us were together last night at a party. One of us is a black man. A good friend to all present. Well, after a few drinks, one of us tells a really bad racial joke that included the "N" word. We all laughed, completely forgetting our black friend being present. Without saying a word the guy left. Needless to say the party then ended. All of us felt like shit. Now our black friend won't answer anyone's voice mails. Won't take any of our calls. Won't even answer his doorbell. Each of us has tried to see him to say how sorry we all are. Is it normal for a person to be so well liked that he blends in with a group of people so much that we forget what color he is? It sucks to lose a friend this way. Because I laughed too, I feel just as guilty as the one who told that awful racist joke.

I've made dozens of racial jokes around my colorful friends and no one has ever gotten that butthurt. I make fun of them and they make fun of me. That's what friendship is all about.

If he's oversensitive, be mindful of it next time. Just give him some time and hopefully he'll get over it.

I'm curious to know what the joke was. Do tell.

I had an engineer on one of the freighters I used to Run. He was a black man from Guyana, had a habit of not washing his hands before he came to the bridge to report and log the hold temperatures (obviously, it was a refer ship). The first watch at sea he put his big hand right in the middle of the chart and left a perfect hand print. Forever after, he was known throughout the Caribbean as the only black man who's black was coming off. Everybody, including blacks and especially my engineer, laughed uproariously whenever the story was told. There are people of color with a great sense of humor and they can tell if there is any unkindness meant.
This guy is way over sensitive if indeed, there was no unkindness meant.

I think the world would just be a much better place if we stopped getting offended by jokes about our race, gender and sexuality. Unfortunately, not everyone feels the same way. The most you can do is respect the fact that he got offended and wait for him to settle down. He may be questioning a lot right now, but I suggest that you guys explain to him as soon as he is ready to talk why exactly the joke was said. I'm sure as an adult he will be able to see things through.

I'm sick and tired of white people being so apologetic towards blacks. The guy is an adult he should grow the fuck up and take it for what it was. A joke!

But we should be apologetic when we offend people. You should not feel guilt about something you have/had no control over, but when you're the reason why someone gets unintentionally hurt it's good to be sorry or feel guilt - because you care.
