I get freaked out by pigeons!

I have an utterly irrational fear of pigeons, and almost all birds. I can't really figure out what horrible childhood event caused this, but if I so much as hear the flutter of wings or cooing near the window, I either have to rush out of the room or run towards it, shouting to scare the birds away. I do blame the pigeons to an extent, because stupidity is something to be scared of... and what's more stupid than a bird that comes into a room through a gap in the window and can't find its way back out again?

The question being: is this fear of birds, and pigeons in particular, normal?

Birds are cute, especially pigeons. Accept them and take them in to your arms!

It's called Orinthophobia (I think I spelled that right)I adore birds, they are the most beautiful animal to me but you are not alone in your feeling. Lucielle Ball liked birds enough but she hated images or figures of them.It was such a deep phobia for her that she made a make up artist take off a bird pin she was wearing before she let her come near her. Also, when she moved into a new home she made a designer come in before hand and change the bird wallpaper. If she were in a hotel she always had bird images on lamps and stuff removed. I love Lucy (don't we all) so it's no big deal that she has a big phobia, I think many people do.

I love birds, I used to have 16 birds all different kinds. I used to feed seagulls every morning at 6 AM in the freezing cold, because I loved them so much. Birds really shouldn't be feared, they are so amazing and vibrant. The beautiful sound of chirping and tweeting. I currently have 3 birds. I also used to feed pigeons. I used to hold seagulls and pigeons, and they would sit in my lap and on my arms. They are truly affectionate and beautiful creatures. True story. :)

i too dislike birds, and i'm also afraid of them. i have a neighbor who loves birds, and she would have their wings clipped so they won't fly away, and let them fly around the house. once i was over there and she let one loose and i completely freaked out. i am also afraid of pigions, like when i see huge group of them gathered together in the park or in the center of my town i don't get to close, in case the fly towards me.
but i think this fear is rational cause they are wild animals and they have flappy wings and sharp beaks and claws that are really scary.
so anyways, i really dislike birds!

Well, of course it's a phobia, indeed. And normally the majority of people doesn't have phobias, but a good minority yes. So, you can consider that is more or less normal to develop a phobia. Yours is not one of the commonest but neither one of the rarest. I had a lady friend that was afraid of little chickens.
Now, if you want to sometime get rid of it, begin by not being more irrational about it. A phobia is precisely an irrational and irrepressible fear of some particular event or thing. Don't worsen it by falsely pseudo-rationalizing it. Pigeons are not guilty of anything and are not more stupid than us humans having irrational and irrepressible fears... Better try to empathize with them, thinking that they would be nearly as badly in fear as you are.
There are different techniques to go on suffocating phobias. They are effective, you just need some patience, motivation and perseverance.
